    STEADMAN

Burke speaks of the ancient and illustrious family of Stedmans (Steadmans) known in England since 1191.  A Scotch family of Stedmans is descended from Patricius Steadman, 1369.  A once strong Welsh family of this name is said now to have no male representatives.  Of the Scotch family are several distinguished writers and soliders.  The first Stedman in New England was Isaac, who came in the "Elizabeth," in 1636, and settled in Scituate. From him is descended Edmund C. Stedman, the poet. John and Robert Stedman came over in 1638.  Robert Stedman's descendants married into the Quincy and Ellery families, and Wm Stedman was a member of congress.  The names of Robert and Thomas Stedman are found on Windsor (Connecticut) records, in 1647, and that of Thomas in New London, in 1649.  From Thomas and Isaac are descended most of the Stedmans of New England, and from that section they have migrated to other portions of the United States.  The destruction of early records, owing to various agencies, make it often a matter of difficulty to establish uninterrupted descent.

    I. James Steadman was probably born in the state of Connecticut, and after his early marriage came to New York state.  He was a farmer. Finally, he located at Conneaut Lake, Crawford county, Pa., and died at the home of his son in Fallowfield township.  He married -------- also born in Connecticut, and of his fourteen children, thirteen attained maturity; six children were by a first marriage, and eight by a second:
    1. William, a farmer and oil operator, lived near Union City, Pa.
    2. John Garner, of further mention.
    3. Earl, a wagon maker, lived at Beaver Dam, Pa.
    4. Daniel, a farmer, lived in Corey, (Corry) Pa.
    5. Polly, married Jesse Carrier, lived in Randolph township, later went west.
    6. Miranda, married Charles Windsor, who operated a saw mill, and lived in Clarion.

    Children by second marriage:
    7.   Samuel, was a farmer in Corey, (Corry), Pa.
    8.   Perry, a farmer in Tenn, where his death occurred.
    9.   Nathan, a retired blacksmith of Corey (Corry).
    10. Jerry, a farmer, who lived in Crawford County, Pa.
    11. Thomas, left home in boyhood.
    12. Nancy.
    13. Rena.
    14. Isabella.

II.  John Garner Steadman, son of James Steadman, was born in Tioga County, NY, in Nov, 1807, and died in October, 1883.  He grew up in the state of NY, assisting his father in the pioneer work connected with the farm, and at the age of eighteen years came to Crawford Co, Pa., where he worked as a farm hand.  Not long afterwards he married, and then rented a farm, which he cultivated for a time.  In 1835, he was living in Tioga county, NY, but returned to Crawford county, where he located in East Fallowfield township.  In 1843 he purchased a fifty acre farm there, this being heavily wooded land.  In order to make the first payment for this land, he drove two steers through the town of Greenville, Pa., and sold them for fifteen dollars.  He could only get five dollars in cash, the remainder being taken in the form of groceries and other commodities.  He walked home, then to Meadville Pa., where he secured the deed for his property, paying the five dollars as security on it, and then walked back to his home.  With the assistance of his sons he errected a log house, and commenced to clear the ground with a view to cultivation. This was done by cutting the timber, and burning it as was the fashion of that time.  He lived on this place until within four years of his death, when he moved to a farm near Geneva, Pa., in Greenwood twp, and there spent the remainder of his life.  He and his wife were active and devout members of the Methodist Episcopal church, in which he was class leader for many years.  Mr. Steadman married Catherine Gross, born near Beaver Dam, Crawford county, Pa., March 2, 1812, died March 10, 1895.
    Children:

    1. Kinsley, deceased, was a Civil War veteran.
    2. Earl, deceased, was a Civil War veteran.
    3. Dow, of further mention.
    4. Wesley, born July 31, 1838; is now living retired in Geneva, Pa.
    5. Nelson, living on a farm in Arkansas, a Civil War veteran, who spent several months in Libby Prison.
    6. Eliza, married Hiram Bedow, lives in Geneva, Pa.
    7. Lester, deceased, was a Civil War Veteran.
    8. Perry, born November 12, 1845, died in 1907; he owned and lived on various farms in Greenwood township; he married Rachael Grinnell, who afterwards married his brother Dow; children: Inez, married Silas Williams, now deceased, and lives in Greenwood township; Elsie, married Park Bailey, lives on a farm in Brookfield, Ohio; Pearl, married Harry Shadley, a machinist, and lives in Youngstown, Ohio.
    9. John, deceased.

(III)  Dow Steadman, son of John Garner and Catherine (Gross) Steadman, was born in Tioga county, New York, Oct 9, 1835.  He grew up in Greenwood township, Crawford county, Pa., and what little education he was able to obtain was acquired at the Finley District School, which was more than two miles from his home.  His opportunities, however, were limited, as he was obliged to devote the greater part of his time at the homestead farm until his eighteenth year.  He then left his home, and spent three years in learning the wagon making trade, under Thomas McDowell, one mile east of Atlantic, Pa.  After his first marriage he purchased a farm in the woods of Randolph township, and when he had this cleared, he sold it with a satisfactory profit.  He at once repeated this operation, netting a considerable sum by the sale of the second farm also.  Feb 1, 1864, he enlisted in Company B, Eighteenth Pa. Cavalry, and served one year and three months.  During the greater part of this time he was located at Harper's Ferry, and he participated in many of the engagements with the Confederate forces under General Early.  At the close of the war he was in the hospital, and when he was discharged he returned to Randolph township, and bought a farm on the Oil Creek road, where he lived several years.  He then moved to Adams county, Neb., and bought a farm there which he is still holding; he took up a claim in Chase county, Kansas, proved it, and returned to Nebraska, where he made his home until 1909. When he first went there he purchased eighty acres for four hundred dollars, and when he left he sold this land for five thousand dollars. He carried on general farming in Adams county.  In 1909 he sold out and retired, and bought a house in Geneva, Crawford county, Pa., where he now lives.  In political matters he is Republican.  At the age of fifteen years he joined the Methodist Episcopal church, and has served as steward, class leader and trustee.  Since coming to Geneva he joined the United Brethren church.

Mr. Steadman married (first) Rachel Ralya, born in the old Block House in Meadville, Pa., in 1826, died August 18, 1908, a daughter of John Ralya, a farmer, of German descent.  He married (second) April 29, 1909, Mrs. Rachael (Grinnell) Steadman, born Oct 3, 1853, widow of his brother Perry.

    Children:

    1. Clara, married Ezra Reese, both deceased.
    2. Nancy, married I.C. Warren, both deceased.
    3. Ida, married Jason Dumas, a boiler maker, lives at Hastings, Nebraska.
    4. Elmer M., a state evangelist, lives in Denver, Colorado: married Mary Garris.

The paternal grandparents of Mrs. Rachael (Grinnell) (Steadman) Steadman, were born in the state of New York, at what is known as Grinnell's Corners.  One of their sons, John Grinnell, served in the War of 1812. Another son was Benjamin, of further mention.James Hull Stedman came to Crawford Co., PA by way of New York State and Warren County, PA. Steadman pedigree is from Meadville Historical Society, Meadville, PA.

Curtis Cemetery is located East of Corry, Erie Co., PA in an area that was at one time Warren County, PA.

William Champlin Steadman and his family are buried there along with his mother Elizabeth Champlin Steadman, ex-wife of James Hull
Steadman. I have photos of all these headstones.  According to the History of Erie County by Warren Beers the Steadman family was from
Kingston, RI and settled in Rome Twp., Crawford County.  These three counties changed borders a few times.  A lot of my info came from the work of Elva Ruth Steadman dau. of Levant Earl (Lee) Steadman, son of Birten Philip (Bert) Steadman, Son of Earl Steadman, Son of John Gardiner Steadman, son of James Hull Steadman, which I located in the Crawford County Historical Society, Meadville, PA.

Enoch Stedman, b. 1762, married Hannah Bull in 1781 and should not be counted in this family.  He may have been serving in the War at this time, as he is not otherwise listed.

Could John, s/o Enoch, have been living with his uncle James and had an affair with his cousin Martha.  And that is why this relationship is so poorly documented?

This postulates that Asa with son Henry returned from New York after his wife Sarah died (?in child birth).  Did they also have a daughter?

This also postulates that Martha died, and James was caring for Martha's son Stephen (who I cannot otherwise place)

James married Isabel Babcock 11 Nov 1762, South Kingstown, Washington Co., RI. Isabel (daughter of Job Babcock and Mary Hull) was born 1740, South Kingstown, Washington Co., RI; died 30 Jun 1792, South Kingstown, Washington Co., RI. [Group Sheet]

  2. 13.  Isabel Babcock was born 1740, South Kingstown, Washington Co., RI (daughter of Job Babcock and Mary Hull); died 30 Jun 1792, South Kingstown, Washington Co., RI.

    Notes:

James Stedman married Isabel Babcock in South Kingstown in 1762.  She is described as the daughter of Job and Mary in her father's will.

The Job Babcock she seems to be descended from was born about 1697 and supposedly married Elizabeth Hull, d/o Tristram, in 1717.  In the LDS records for this couple there is an Isabel born about 1726-1728.  I also find references in the LDS data to Job having a wife Mary but no children are listed.

Tristram Hull and Elizabeth Dyer had a daughter Mary (b. abt 1700-1702) and a daughter Elizabeth (b. abt 1717).

James Stedman was born (SK records) in 1738.  He died in 1822.  Isabel (Babcock) Stedman died 1792.  She is presumed born about 1740, but I do not have a good source for that birth.  Some LDS records also show Isabel born in 1740.

I have reviewed Rhode Island records from the FTM CD and can only conclude that Job's wife when he wrote his will was named Mary.  The children mentioned in the will are named the same as the children mentioned as children of Job and Elizabeth so it is unlikely that we are talking about a different Job.

    My main problems are:

    (1) I believe that Job did not marry Elizabeth Hull (d/o Tristram), but instead married Mary Hull, d/o Tristram Hull.  Either that or he married an Elizabeth Hull who was not a d/o Tristram (and I find no evidence to suggest that such an Elizabeth existed in the correct geographical area).

    (2) I believe that the birth dates for the children of Job and Elizabeth (i.e., Mary) are estimates.  I do not see any evidence that another Isabel existed at this time period in SK ,and it is unlikely that James Steadman married a woman 10 years his senior.  Further, the youngest documented child was of James and Isabel was born in 1782 which is unlikely for a woman born in 1726.
