    Mrs. L. H. Hughes announces the engagement of her daughter, Nellie Grant, to Mr. Shelton Sanford, the marriage to take place on the evening of October 3 at the home of the bride on Washington avenue in this city.

    Miss Nellie Hughes and Mr. Shelton Sanford were married at the home of the bride on Washington avenue, Wednesday evening, the 3rd at 6 o'clock. The Episcopal ceremony was used by the Rev. T. M. N. George. E. H. Clay was best man and little Miss Chamberlain was flower girl. Mr. and Mrs. Sanford left for Macon, Ga.

    Death of Mrs. C. V. Sanford

    Mrs. Charles V. Sanford died at her home in Macon, Ga., last Thursday afternoon at 5:30 o'clock, after a long illness.

    She is well known in Covington and her death will bring deep regret to many hearts.

    Mrs. Sanford was the daughter of Col. Enoch Steadman, of Newton county, who was a leading man of this section, and was at one time president of Georgia senate. She was born in Murfreesboro, Tenn., on Aug. 8, 1848, and was married at Covington, Ga. Dec. 2, 1867, to Mr. Charles V. Sanford, son of the distinquished teacher and author, Shelton P. Sanford, who for so many years, filled the chair of mathematics at Mercer university. After her marriage she and her husband resided for many years at Covington and Conyers where Mr. Sanford conducted successful business enterprises. Afterwards they removed to Macon, where they have since resided.

    For the past five years Mrs. Sanford has been a consistant sufferer from ill health, and for two months past has been critically ill. Her patience in suffering and her preparedness for the inevitable end are but additional evidences of her Christian character. She was a faithful member of the First Baptist church at Macon, and was a regular attendant on its service till her failing health forbade.

    She is survived by her husband, her mother, Mrs. Mary Steadman, of Covington, and five children, Prof. Q. V. Sanford, of the University of Georgia, at Athens: C. D. Sanford, of Macon; Shelton P. Sanford, of Marietta; Paul H. Sanford, of Savannah, and Miss Annie Sanford, of Macon.

    The many friends of the family both here and elsewhere, throughout the state, will deeply sympathize with the bereaved family.

    Macon, Ga., July 29 - (Special.) - Mrs. Charles V. Sanford died last night at her residence, 636 College Street, after an illness of two months.

    Mrs. Sanford was the daughter of Col. Enoch Steadman, of Newton county, a man prominent in the affairs of that section of the state, and at one time president of Georgia senate. In 1867 Mrs. Stanford was married to Charles V. Sanford, son of Shelton P. Sanford, the distinguihed scholar. Mrs. Sanford came to Macon with her husband, who was for a number of years professor of mathematics at Mercer university. She was a member of the First Baptist church and was a woman of beautiful Christian character. She is survived by her husband, her mother, Mrs. Mary Steadman, of Covington, and five children, Professor Q. V. Sanford, of the University of Georgia, Athens; C. D. Sanford, of Macon; Paul H. Sanford, of Savannah, and Miss Annie Sanford, of Macon. The funeral will occur tomorrow from the residence, the Rev. Mr. Cheaves, of Montezuma, offiiciating. The internment will be in Riverside cemetery.

He graduated from U. of Ga., in 1838, sharing first honor with B. M. Palmer; William Hope Hull and Isaiah Irwin. He became Prof. of Mathematics at Mercer U., a position he held for many years. In 1840 he was m. to Maria F. Dickerman. Several children. In recognition of his learning and ability, Mercer U., bestowed on him the degree of Doctor of Laws.

    Special to The Constitution.

    COVINGTON, November 8.-- Colonel Enoch Steadman died here at his home after a few days illness. COlonel Steadman for many years was known as one of the most financially successful men of his age -- has occupied several positions of public trust -- was a member of the Baptist church, warm-hearted, genial and kind, he leaves many friends besides a devoted wife and two children to mourn his his death. He was about sixty-five years old.

    Colonel Steadman was at one time the owner of the Lawrenceville cotton factory, and later of the Newton cotton factory. He held various positions of public trust, and was once elected to the state senate from his district. His public spirit and liberality were exceptional, and during recent years he gave much time and labor to the promotion of the industries of the state.
