    Notes:

    From Nick Stedman (Nov 2006):

"William the youngest son, was a Chemist and inherited the Chemists business. He married Sarah Anne Whiting from Addington, Kent and had 4 sons and 2 daughters. He appeared to die fairly suddenly in 1850 as his youngest son, Alfred was christened on 17th Feb 1850, but by the time William's mother, Elizabeth, writes her Will on 15th Oct 1850 he is referred to as 'my late son, William'. In the 1851 census, the Chemists was already being run by Richard Broomfield Stedman. In the 1871 census, Sarah Anne was still living in High, W Malling with daughters Ellen and Jane, and with Alfred (21), a Draper. The eldest two sons, William and James can't be traced. The third son, George, became a Brewery Manager in Milton-in-Gravesend and had 2 sons and 1 daughter. Alfred married, had 2 sons and 3 daughters. He moved to Hambledon, Hampshire but eventually became a Restaurateur in the Channel Islands."

  1. 2.  James Stedman was born Bef 17 Jun 1763; was christened 17 Jun 1763, Speldhurst, Kent, England, UK (son of Nathaniel Stedman and Mary Parsons); died Bef 4 Sep 1828; was buried 4 Sep 1828, West Malling, Kent, England, UK.

    Other Events:

    • Occupation: Chemist

    Notes:

    From Nicholas Stedman (Nov 2006):

"James's origin has not yet been proved, but I have some information that he came from Speldhurst near Tunbridge Wells. In his Will he referred to two of his sisters, Mary Mulcock and Susannah Blake, both widows in 1828 when James wrote his Will and the year in which he died.

James was a 'Chymist and Druggist' of High St, W Malling, Kent. He married Elizabeth Martin of nearby Plaxtol, the daughter of Francis Martin, on 21st Jan 1788 in W Malling. It has been suggested that Elizabeth Martin came from W Malling, the daughter of one Edward Martin. Although there was such an Elizabeth Martin of a similar age, ours was the one from Plaxtol. Her marriage in W Malling was witnessed by her father, Francis Martin who later, in his Will, forgives James Stedman, Chemist of W Malling, 'sums owed'. In the 1851 census Elizabeth Stedman gave her place of birth as Plaxtol so there is no doubt that she is the daughter of Francis Martin of Plaxtol.

The Chemists was taken over by the youngest son, William. Although William had 4 sons, he died before they were old enough to take the business on, so it passed to one of James's grandsons, Richard Broomfield Stedman. He ran the business until some time after 1891 when he described it as 'pharmaceutical chemist, bookseller and stationer and circulating library'. (An odd mixture but for those readers old enough, remember Boots the Chemists!). He passed the business to his youngest son Arthur who was running it in 1901. It does not seem to exist today, but I have recently met someone who was born in W Malling c 1950 and who remembers the Stedman Chemist shop."

    ______________

James Stedman, son of Nathaniel Stedman and Mary, was baptized at Speldhurst, according to an IGI submission.

James married Elizabeth Martin 21 Jan 1788, West Malling, Kent, England, UK. Elizabeth (daughter of Francis Martin and Elizabeth Jeffrey) was born Bef 23 Jun 1764, Plaxtol, Kent, England, UK; was christened 23 Jun 1764, Plaxtol, Kent, England, UK; died Between 1 Oct 1854 and 31 Dec 1854, Malling RD, Kent, England, UK. Notes:

    Fron Nick Stedman:

    Elizabeth Martin (1765 - 1854)

    There were two Elizabeth Martins:

    1. Elizabeth Martin born in Plaxtol (about 7 miles from W Malling). Baptised 23 June 1765 (Ancestral File AFN:TP3Q-20). Father: Francis Martin (app 1733 -1801). Mother: Elizabeth Jeffrey (app 1734 - 1818)

    2. Elizabeth Martin born in W Malling. Baptised 26 April 1767 (IGI Batch C 131591; Source Call 0992509). Father: Edward Martin. Mother: Elizabeth Marshall.

I have researched a little into the two families and they do not appear to be related.

James Stedman married the Elizabeth Martin from Plaxtol.

    Evidence:

    a. The marriage record in the Kent County Archives, Maidstone:

James Stedman of this parish and Elizabeth Martin of this parish a spinster married in this church by Licence 21st January 1788 by me R Husband (vicar) signed James Stedman, Elizabeth Martin (apparently in their own handwriting), in presence of FRANSs MARTIN and (the mark of) MARGARET SPARKS.

    b. The Will of Francis Martin of Plaxtol, Shopkeeper, written on the 30th Jan 1800 and proved at London on the 28th Jan 1801:

…. Also I do forgive James Stedman of West Malling in the County of Kent, Chemist, and Abraham Phelps of the same place, ? , all and every sum and sums of money as they may be indebted to me at the time of my death. ……

    c. The 1851 Census for West Malling: at 7 High St., W Malling

Elizabeth Stedman Head of Household, 88, Annuitant, born Plaxtol.
Sarah Elizabeth Stedman Granddaughter, 28, born Billericay, Essex.

    d. The name Silas was given to the one of James' and Elizabeth's children. This name does not appear to be used by the other (no 2) Martin family. However, Elizabeth Martin of Plaxtol had an elder brother called Silas. He may have died as he is not named in the Will of Francis. The children and approx. birth dates of Francis and Elizabeth were:

    Silas (1759)
    Anne (1761)
    Sarah (1763)
    Elizabeth (1765)
    Mary (1769)
    John (1772)
    William (1775)
    Thomas (1776)
    Francis (1785)
    James 1787)

All the children are mentioned in the Will except Silas and William. Anne (or Anna) is cited as the wife of Abraham Phelps and Elizabeth is cited as the wife of James Stedman.

    Dear Mr. Lisle,
Thank you for your e-mail of May 16th.

    Other Events:

    • Alt. Birth: Cal 1678, Ardingly, Sussex, England, UK

    Notes:

Thomas and William Stedman were identified as sons of a Thomas Stedman, born in Ardingly, on a well distributed family tree of this family. The link is not documented.

Mandy Willard (http://www.mandywillard.co.uk/index.htm) has documented that they are children of John Stedman and Mary Burstow of the neighboring village of Balcombe.

Although she does not present any evidence to support her analysis, I think she is correct. Two facts tend to support her contention. First, as Balcombe is just about two miles from Ardingly, one can easily accept that they moved to the next village. Second, a William Stedman was baptized at Balcombe in Balcombe in 1678, and the William Stedman in Ardingly was buried there in 1760 at age 82 which would calculate out to a birth in 1678.

    Christened:
Will. Stedman, son of Jo. Stedman, was baptized at Balcombe, according to an IGI Parish record.

    Buried:
According to the National Burial Index, William Stedman, age 82, was buried at St. Peter, Ardingly.

It also identified Sarah Watson of being of Ardingly and being born 1684. She was buried 17 December 1754 at Ardingly.
