    Debra Kay Page

The following text is from "The Keasler Book Descendants of Henry Kesler, Planter of Newberry County, South Carolina" written and compiled by Inez Winans:

The earliest ancestor of whom we have any knowledge is Henry Kesler who died 1802 in Newberry County, South Carolina. His name, and that of his descendants, has been spelled many ways in early records and this has been a problem in our research. I believe the original spelling was Kiesler, possibly Kessler, although I know of no present day descendants who spell it either way. The signature on his Will, on file in Newberry County, is too illegible to be of any help; it is very possible he first signed John Henry, and then signed again so that his signature would conform to the "I, Henry" above. It is evident that he was a resident of Virginia before moving to South Carolina. He served in the Revolutionary War while living in Virginia, and we believe moved to Newberry County about 1785, very close to the time his son Abraham was born. Land records clearly indicate he was there in 1786. The first land transaction was recorded October 24, 1786 in Book E, page 137: he bought 200 acres "lying in Craven County on the south side of Broad River ... on the waters of Second Creek". A second transaction is recorded December 23, 1793 (State Plats, Vol 29, page 218) -- for 31 acres, adjoining his presently owned land. (His name is clearly spelled Keisler on this document, but it is not a signature.) On the first official US Census of 1790, our Henry is shown as Henry Kessler and living in the North Part of Orangeburg District, which later became Newberry County. (Until 1868, counties were called Districts in South Carolina.) A Barbara Keasler and a George Keasler are shown on that same census, but we have been unable to establish any connection to them to learn anything further about them.

The David Keasler family has a legend about our family's arrival in the United States: "Two young men, still in their teens, ran away from their home in Germany to escape the Universal Militray Training then in practice in that country. They landed in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and after a while one wend north, and the other went south, and they never saw each other again." This quote is from the book "Descendants of David Keasler", published in 1969 by William H. Keasler. The legend may be true. I have considered another possible explanation for the story. A ship called "Two Brothers" brought large numbers of immigrants to this country in the 1700's, and our ancestor may have come on this ship.

The Will of 1802 and other estate papers indicate that Henry Kesler died July 29, 1802 in Newberry County, that he had 10 living children at the time he wrote it, and since his wife is not mentioned, we assume she died between 1788 and 1802. We do not know her name.

    Notes:

"The Shealys. John Windell Shealy was the first of the name that came from the old country to this. A man named John Adam Epting brought over a small colony from the city of Heidelberg, consisting of Shealy, Leitzey, Setzler, Cromer and Myer, in the year 1763. They were all Lutherans, and were among the founders of the present St. John's church. John Windell Shealy married Miss Epting, daughter of Mr. Epting, the pioneer of the colony, in the year 1770, and settled near where W. C. Shealy now lives.

The fruits of this union were twelve sons and one daughter. I can give the names of only eight of these sons; the others I have never learned: Windell, William, Adam, John, Henry, Matthias, David and Andrew. Of these, William, Windell and David married Wertses; Andrew married a Miss Sawyer, and the daughter of Mr. Quattlebaum. Whom the others sons married, if they ever married, I am unable to say.

Mr. Shealy, the pioneer, died in the year 1814, and was buried near the place where he first settled. He lived long enough to see all his sons fully grown; and they were all strong, robust men. They stood six feet in height, and the least and lightest one of them weighed 175 pounds. In those days, when men defended themselves, on all ordinary occasions, with the weapons given them by nature, these twelve brothers, if they felt their rights assailed, could have given any other twelve, or more, a lively tussle.

Mr. Shealy owned all the lands in and around Little Mountain at that time, and settled not a few of his children on them; hence this is the Mecca of the Shealy. Within a few hundred yards of the residence or Mr. W. C. Shealy is the spring of fresh, cool, clear, bubbling water used by the original John Windell Shealy, and it still has in it a portion of the gum placed there by Mr. Shealy over one hundred and twenty years ago. The men of this family, like others who are the salt of the earth, are farmers, cultivators of the soil, and attend to their own business and let others' alone. Some of them are preachers of the gospel, ministers in the Lutheran Church - they are all Lutherans - and one is a teacher of youth, whom I have heard mentioned as a man of large brain and heart, but of small body, like my friend Squire Padgett of Edgefield."
