    To: STEDMAN-L@rootsweb.com

Hello!  I'm new to the Stedman list so I hope you all can help me out with
    my "brick wall".

I am looking for information on the ancestors of John Truscan Stedman, born
3/5/1809 in Hartford, Ct. He was married to Eliza Ann Philips who was born
4/23/1814 also in Hartford.  Supposedly the Stedman's were a family of
sailor's descending from Scotland. Apparently John Truscan was the first man
to break that tradition by not becoming a sailor.

Family lore has it that John's parents were David and Rachel Stedman, both
born in Hartford, David around 1777 and Rachel about 1788. But we have no
info on them. Family lore has it that Rachel's ancestor's were great
supporters of the Revolutionary War and even gave 600 acres of land on which
Hartford was built. Again, I cannot confirm this as I have no family name
    for Rachel.

Family lore also has it that David's grandfather (born about 1736) and his
grandfather's two brothers fought under General George Washington in the
Revolutionary War.  The names of Benjamin, Edward and George Stedman were
mentioned in this context, but we don't know which was David's grandfather
or whether the other two names are the brothers or maybe sons......

Any information / help would be greatly appreciated!

    Hello!

Always new faces on list, so thought I would post again.....

I'm looking for info on the parents of  John Truscan Stedman, b 3-5-1809 in
Hartford, CT, married to Eliza Ann Philips, born 4-23-1814 also in Hartford,
CT. They immigrated to Zanesville, OH, and eventually, Centerpoint, IN,
    where they died.

John & Eliza Stedman had 9 natural children and one adopted daughter:
Charles, William Henry, George, Jenetta, Mary, Margaret, Harriet Ann, Eliza
Ellen, Emma Caroline and adopted daughter Mary Ann Colter.  All were born in
    Zanesville, OH.

The family lore is that John's parents were David and Rachel Stedman, both
born in Hartford, CT, ca 1777 and 1788 respectively. Other family lore is
that David's grandfather and 2 great uncles fought under George Washington
in the Revolution.  Names were thought to be Benjamin, Edward and George
Stedman, although which was the grandfather, and which were the great-uncles
    is unknown.

    Anything sound familiar?

    Thanks!
    Vic

Does anyone have any information concerning Stedman's who fought under Gen
George Washington in the Revolutionary War?  Any suggestions as to where I
    might look for this information?

My brick wall is stopped at David and Rachel Stedman.  It was said that
David's grandfather, and his grandfathers 2 brothers all fought under GW.
The names are Benjamin, Edward and George, but David's descendants didn't
know who was who. David's grandfather and one brother were killed in the Rev
    War.

David Stedman was born in Hartford, CT, in 1777/78 and his wife Rachel was
born in Hartford in 1788, died April 1848.

David was a mariner as was all his forebears. Apparently that stopped with
David's son, John Truscan Stedman, who declined to live his life at sea,
breaking a family tradition of 10 generations. (or so the story goes).

I know it's not much to go on.
    Thanks!

    Hi John,

Okay, here is what we know about our Stedmans....

    1)David Stedman    -----m.-------  Rachel (?)
    b. 1777/78                                     b.  1788
pl.  Hartford,  CT                        pl. Hartford, CT
    d.  UNK                                        d.  April 11, 1848
pl. UNK (OH or IN?)                 pl.  UNK (OH or IN?)

David and Rachel had 2 sons:

    2) Edwin Stedman
(No info...apparently he did not travel to Ohio with the family but
went further north and became an author, or so say the family notes.)

    2)  John Truscan Stedman  -------m.----   Eliza Ann Philips (1st wife)
    b. Mar 5, 1809                                              b. April 23, 1814
pl. Hartford, CT                                          pl. Hartford, CT
    d. Sept 9, 1893                                              d. Aug 25, 1872
pl. Cloverland, IN                                       pl. Centerpoint, IN
                                                     |
John Truscan Stedman and Eliza Ann Philips had 9 children:

    3)  Charles (no dates)
    3)  William Henry (b 1829; d. Oct 1924 at Cloverland, IN)
    3)  George (no dates, but died at Centerpoint, IN)
    3)  Jenetta (b. Aug 30, 1852; d. Jan 20, 1924 at Brazil, IN)
    3)  Mary  (b. Sep 14, 1855; d. Apr 10, 1914 at Brazil, IN)
    3)  Margaret (No dates)
    3)  Harriet Ann (b. June 23, 1838; d Nov 11, 1849 at Zanesville, OH)
    3)  Eliza Ellen (b. Jan 14, 1849; died Mar 1, 1860 at Zanesville, OH)
    3)  Emma Caroline (no dates)

John married  2nd wife, Susan Woodruff
    They had two children:

    3)  Henry Wilbert
    3)  George Stedman

I descend through the William Henry line. We have notes that William Henry Stedman wrote in 1915, that discuss the fact that his grandfathers (David's) grandfather and the grandfather's two brothers fought under George Washington in the Rev War. And that the grandfather and one brother were killed. William Henry notes that he didn't remember which name belonged to whom, but they were Benjamin, George and Edward.

Obviously, I haven't been able to confirm any of this or even get a good lead. Also, William Henry wrote that Rachel Stedman's family was very wealthy but gave up most of their money to help finance the Rev War. He also said that Rachel's family donated 600 acres on which Hartford now stands.

Again, I can't confirm this as we don't have Rachel's maiden name.

William Henry also writes that he heard his grandfather David tell his father, John Truscan, that he lost the family bible in a house fire and that the bible had listed all the Stedman births and deaths for 10 generations back to Scotland and they were from "an unbroken line of sailors" of which John Truscan broke the tradition by remaining landed.

Not much to go on, so I keep looking and hoping!  With my luck, my line is just one of those little twigs out there that will never be joined to the main branch! LOL

Thanks for all you do to keep us Stedman researchers up to date!

    Hi  John,

Well I looked this over last night and am thinking that who you show as William Henry Stedman's first wife "ANNA"  is really Deborah Ann Smith, dau of Oliver Hiram Smith and Mary Violetta McBride.  We have the family as being:

William Henry and Deborah Ann Smith & their 7 children:

    John  (m. Corilee Stoneburner)
    Oliver Hiram
    Eliza Hiram
George Nelson (m. Elsa Houk or Hook)
Mary Violetta  (m. John William Weber)  [my line]
Charles Perry  (m. Martha J Birch)
    Ella Nora  (m. James Wright)

I have no clue who "Lewellen" is.

We show a second marriage of  William Henry to Margaret Holiday with 2 children:
    Eva
    Frances

There are some discrepancies in children and names in the 3rd and 4th generations from our records, so I plan to swing by my folks house tonight after work and pick up the book with all the information in it. I just have some of it here with me at work.

I'll be able to give you some better information then.

    We'll figure this out!
