    Notes:

Henry Steadman was born in Rutherford County, North Carolina, about 1800.  He married Mary Smith about 1822/23.  They became the parents of twelve children of record.  Henry and Mary were recorded in the 1830-1850 census for Rutherford Co., NC.  It is thought that he moved to Tenessee after the 1850 census.  At the time of the 1830 census, three unidentified persons (2 males and 1 female - probably in-laws) were living with him.

The Steadman book, by Joseph Earle Steadman, documented the names of 10 children.  The author's guess is that the 2 oldest daughters either died or married prior to 1850.

From book "Some Spartanburg County Cemeteries" edited by Joseph R. Gainey:

New Hope Methodist Episcopal Church, South was organied around 1859.  It occupied a site on Hwy. 11 (old Island Ford Road) 3.2 miles east of Fingerville.  The church  burned in 1869 and most of the membership migrated to North Carolina.  Those who remained formed Trinity Methodist Church, but abandoned this site.  In 1898 this site was deeded to Thomas Shields becuase it contained the graves of his parents, Thomas A. Shields and his first wife.  Today, there are 4 adult graves located here.  They are surrounded by a fence and marked at both their heads and feet with fieldrocks.  In the center of this plot is a fairly new marker which reads "Shields Memorial."
