"Stedman alias Osborn 1750-1850" by John Jones
An alias persisting through four generations in the Coldwaltham area.
Although the use of an alias[1] was very common in medieval England and still frequent in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, examples are not met very often in the period 1750-1850. The cases which are found in this period are usually isolated incidences. The Stedman alias Osborn family of the Coldwaltham area, in which the alias was transmitted through several branches and prolific generations is therefore of interest, and may even amount to some sort of record. Many of the ramifications of this family are still obscure but the scope and complications of the alias can be demonstrated. The spellings of the two surnames are standardized throughout.
The progenitor: John OSBORN, yeoman of Petworth in 1751 but of Coldwaltham [2] in 1763 when he made his will (proved 1763). His only known issue is James below.
His son: James, baptised 'James STEDMAN, illegitimate' at Petworth in 1747. No clue to the identity of either parent was recorded when he was baptised but he appears in the will of John above as the latter's 'loving son James STEDMAN alias OSBORN'. He was married at Stopham in 1765 as Stedman. He appears in Coldwaltham baptismal entries in 1767, 1772, 1780, 1783 and 1784, but as OSBORN in 1770 and 1774. He described himself as 'STEDMAN alias OSBORN' when he made his will in 1810 (proved 1811) but was buried as plan OSBORN in 1811, as his wife Mary had been eight years before. Mary is mentioned in the will of her father William Roberts (made 1778, proved 1782) as 'Mary OSBORN, wife of James STEDMAN OSOBORN'.
Grandchildren: Ten, mostly baptised 1767-1784, are known: James, William, Jonathan, George, Clement, Sarah, Charlotte, Francis, Richard and Peter. All but James survived to be mentioned in their father's will, and of the sons, William, George and Richard at least had legitimate issue in the Coldwaltham area. These three sometimes appear as STEDMAN, sometimes as OSBORN and sometimes with an explicit indication of the alias.
George, for example, was married at Sutton in 1806 as STEDMAN, which is also the name given in the baptismal records (Pulborough and Coldwaltham) of most of his children (1809-1829), but in two cases (1812 and 1829) it is given as OSBORN. He was certified dead in 1838 as 'Stedman commonly called Osborn', but was buried as Osborn like his father. His widow Jemima appears as Stedman in the census returns of 1841, 1851, and 1861 but made her mark as Osborn in the Register of Deaths three times 1846-1848: at the registration of her own death in 1870 she was entered as - 'Osborn otherwise Stedman'.
William and Richard and their wives present similarly complex examples although it would appear that Richard at least had dropped the Osborn alias by the end of his life as he did not mention it when he made his will in 1845 (proved 1847) and there is no allusion to it in his death registration or that of his widow Mary in 1865.
The complications arising from the legitimate progeny of George, William and Richard, however, pale into insignificance beside the case of James, illegitimate son of Jonathan 'Osborn alias Stedman' by Rebecca Denier, who was baptised in 1812. According to the practice of the rest of the family this James might have been STEDMAN, OSBORN, DENIER or have used any combination of these as aliases but in fact he appears in the 1841 census as James STRUDWICK, living with Rebecca STRUDWICK in the household of Jonathan STEDMAN; in the will (made 1845 and proved 1849) of Jonathan 'Stedman otherwise Osborn' he appears as the testator's 'natural or reputed son James STEDMAN otherwise STRUDWICK'.
Great grandchildren: These were very numerous. As with their parents their nomenclature is erratic but is additionally complicated in most cases by the complete absence of explicit indications of the alias. For example, Mary, daughter of George above, was Stedman at baptism in 1809 but Osborn at burial in 1832. Her married sister Martha TYLER appears in birth registrations as 'formerly Stedman' in 1840 but 'formerly Osborn' in 1843 and 1845. James, brother or cousin of Mary and Martha, was married as Stedman in 1828 and most of his children were baptised 1831-1842 under that name, but one was baptised and buried in 1837 as Osborn, and at his own death in 1844 he was registered simply as Osborn although his widow Ann remarried in 1848 as Stedman.
Great great grandchildren: These were no doubt also numerous but only one has been investigated. This is Frank or Francis, son of James above. He was Stedman at marriage at Bignor in 1852 and at the registration of the birth of his daughter Mary Jane in 1852 and at the registration of her sister Sarah in 1855 he appears as Osborn although no mention of this name appears in the death registration of his wife Sarah in 1959. All members of all branches and generations of the family who have been traced are listed in census returns 1841-1871 as Stedman with the solitary exception of this Frank in 1861 when he is Osborn, no doubt because he was then a widower living in the home of his employer who gave the name by which he knew him to the enumerator.
