    Notes:

THOMAS HAMMOND, son of William and Mary ((???)) Hammond, of Melford, England, and grandson of John and Agnes ((???)) Hammond, of Lavenham, England, was baptized at Melford, County of Suffolk, England, with his twin brother, John, Sept. 2, 1603. He was a first cousin of William Hammond, who settled in Watertown, Mass., in 1636.

He married in Lavenham, England, Nov. 12, 1623, Elizabeth Cason, b. in Great Whelnetham, a few miles north of Lavenham, before 1604, daughter of Robert and Prudence (Hammond) Cason. She was a grand-daughter of Robert and Elizabeth ((???)) Hammond, of Great Whelnetham.

Robert Hamond's will, dated Nov. 15, 1604, proved June 20, 1605, recorded at Bury St. Edmund's, (Coppinger, Folio 387,) gives to wife Elizabeth a tenement in Lawshall called "Hawkstreet," at her death to go to son Thomas, who is given a house in Lawshall, called "Powell."

To son John a farm at Great Whelnetham.

Mentions sons, Robert and William; daughters, Elizabeth, Anne, Grace and Ellen.

To daughter, Prudence, wife of Robert Cason, a legacy, and to granddaughter, Elizabeth Cason, one cow.

Also mentions grandson, George, son of his son, Robert, and granddaughter, Mary Hamond.

Makes his son, John Hamond, sole executor

It may have been this son, Robert Hammond, an uncle of Elizabeth (Cason) Hammond, who was in Scituate, Mass., owning land there while Thomas and Elizabeth were residents of Hingham.

Thomas Hammond was one of the first settlers in Hingham, Mass. Had land granted him therein 1636. Took the freeman's oath March 9, 1636-7.

He was on the grand jury in 1637. His two younger children were baptized in Hingham. The elder children were undoubtedly born in England, although the place of their birth has not been definitely ascertained.

Thomas Hammond, Vincent Druce, John Parker, Nicholas Hodgdon and John Winchester all settled in Hingham at about the same time; all of these removed from there and settled in the same neighborhood, near the boundary line between what are now the towns of Newton and Brookline, Mass.

Nicholas Hodgdon first purchased 67 acres of land on Cambridge Hill, which he sold Dec. 4, 1650, to Thomas Hammond and Vincent Druce, then of Hingham.  They also bought 13 acres, granted by the town of Cambridge to Robert Bradish, and 16 acres in Muddy River, next to lands of John Parker.  Hammond and Druce bought in 1658, of Thomas Brattle and others, 600 acres in Muddy River (now Brookline) called Royton farm, which they held in common for some years.  The division was finally made as shown by his unsigned will.  He probably removed to Cambridge Village (now Newton) about 1650, but held lands in Hingham for some years after that date.  In 1652, he sold land there (Suffolk Deeds, folios 221-222) as follows:

    EXTRACTS FROM DEED.

                                      (Signed) Elizabeth Hamond.

Acknowledged the seaven and Twentieth of the Third month by Thomas Hamond & Elizabeth, his wife, before me, Increase Nowell.

Entered and Ricorded 4 August, 1652.

                                    (Signed) p Edward Rawson, Recdr.

In 1656, he sold lands in Hingham to William Sprague for  £60. In the same year he bought of Esther Sparhawk, daughter of Nathaniel Sparhawk, 330 acres more of land, in Cambridge, for  £40.

His homestead, in Newton, was near the Brookline boundary and near a beautiful sheet of water, which has since borne his name, "Hammond Pond."  The homestead remained in the family several generations, Josiah Hovey Hammond, father of Mr. George W. Hammond, of the Forest Paper Co., having been the last of the race who was born there.

Thomas Hammond was one of the wealthiest men in town in his day. There seems to have been a close friendship between himself and Vincent Druce, but no relationship has been shown by any papers or records found.

He died in 1675, leaving an unsigned will which was admitted to probate, a copy of which is given below. It is found in Middlesex Probate, No. 7160.
    ___________

    WILL OF THOMAS HAMMOND.
    1675.

I, Thomas Hamond, of Cambridge, County of Middlesex, in New England, being now aged, yet through the favor of God of sound judgement, do make and ordain my last will and testament in manner following, viz: My immortal soul I do commit and leave in the arms and mercy of God the Father, Son and Holy Ghost.

My body decently to be buried, at the discretion of my executors, and as for my outward estate, my will is that my just debts being paid, the remainder shall be divided in manner as follows, viz:

I give and bequeath unto my daughter, Elizabeth Woodward, and her heirs, 100 acres of land at the farm called Hodgdens Farms, belonging unto Muddy River; one part of it being the 3d division for the meadow as appears by an indenture made the 20th day of June, 1664, for the division of the said farm betwixt the aforesaid Thomas Hamond and Vincent Druce, who were joint purchasers of the said farm, which division was in length from one side of the said farm over the great hill unto the other side of the farm, and is measured out to be 60 rods in breadth, which division contains 70 acres of land or thereabouts. Also 30 acres more which is not yet particularly divided out of another parcel of the same farm, which fell in division unto me, adjoining Roxbury line.

Also I give unto my daughter, Sarah Stedman, and to her heirs in the time of her life 100 acres of land.

I do confirm, give, grant and bequeath unto her two daughters, which she left behind her, viz.: Sarah Stedman and Elizabeth Stedman, the said 100 acres of land, viz.: One parcel of land running from one side of the farm over the great hill, being 60 rods in breadth and containing the sum of seventy acres, or thereabouts, which is called 2d division, and lyeth between the division given unto my daughter, Woodward, S. E. and N. E. upon Vincent Druce, and 30 acres to be out of that farm, part of my land aforementioned near unto the Roxbury line.  These two parcels of land I do give and grant to be equally divided between the said Sarah and Elizabeth Stedman, my grandchildren, to have and to hold the said lands respectively to their heirs and assigns forever.

Also I do give unto my son, Thomas, the house he dwells in and the field that is fenced in on the lower side of the highway against the house of Vincent Druce and unto the great ditch, containing 5 acres or thereabouts.

Also unto my son, Nathaniel, I give unto him the house he dwells in, and all the upland adjoining with cranberry meadow adjoining the Pond unto troublesome swamp.

Also unto my beloved wife, Elizabeth Hamond, I give and bequeath during her life, my dwelling house, meadows, pasture on the N. E. side of the highway, from cranberry meadow unto the lands of Thomas Greenwood, Capt. Prentice, John Ward and Thomas Prentice.

Also I give unto my son, Nathaniel, all that my meadow commonly called Cambridge meadow; and I give unto him also one-third part of that my meadow belonging unto the farm, and the rest unto my son, Thomas.

Furthermore: My will is that the cattle which shall be left after my wife's decease, shall be divided betwixt my two sons, and what moveables shall then remain to be parted equally betwixt my two sons and my daughter, Woodward.

Furthermore: I ordain my beloved wife to be sole executrix of this, my last will and testament.

Furthermore: My will is that my son, Nathaniel, have one third part of the fruit of the orchard with my son, Thomas, year by year until he has an orchard of his own, and use of the barn until his brother help him build one.

This writing was exhibited without date or subscription by Elizabeth Hamond, the relict, widow of the above named Thomas Hamond, deceased, the 5 of Nov., 1675, being in the handwriting of the said Hamond.

His inventory amounted to £1,139 16s 2d and was by Elder Wiswall and John Spring.  It was dated Oct. 25, 1675, and states that he deceased Sept. 30, 1675.  A family tradition relative to Elizabeth Cason, his wife, is given on p. 299 of Jackson's History of Newton and is as follows:

"It is said that when a young woman, in England, she took a walk with a party of young folks and went into the Mint to see how money was coined. The master of the Mint was pleased with her appearance and chat, and gave her an invitation to try her hand in the operation.  She had evidently made some impression on him, and he was desirous to know if she could make as good an impression upon the coin; so he placed a piece of silver coin upon the die, about the size of a half crown--she came forward and grasped the lever and stamped a fair impression upon the coin, whereupon he presented her with the silver piece, which she bore off in triumph; and from her fair hand it has passed through those of her descendants, to the seventh generation, and is now (1854) possessed by Stephen Hammond, of Roxbury, whose son, William, of the eighth, is looking wishfully for it."

This coin is now (1902) in the possession of Mr. George W. Hammond, of Yarmouthville, Me.

"At a Court held in Boston, by adjournment, March 28, 1680, Adm. on the estate of Richard Griffin, sometime of Muddy River, dec'd, intestate, formerly under the administration of Mary his relict, now also dec'd, is granted to Joseph Griffin, his son." (Suffolk Court Records, Vol. 9, p. 1.)

An ancient note book kept by Nathaniel Hammond, Jr., is still in existence and is now (1902) in possession of a descendant, Mr. George Warren Hammond, of Yarmouthville, Me. It contains many valuable records relating to early Newton families and is relied upon to prove, without a question of doubt, who his mother really was. So much doubt has been entertained on this point in the past that the author has taken pains to copy a few entries from this very interesting and ancient book. The following are among the earlier entries and may be taken to prove the connection conclusively. Under date of Feb. 23, 1711-12, the entry is as follows:

Then reckoned with my unkol, Joseph Griffin, and paid for his son's work, the year ending June 12, 1711.

There is also an entry of money paid to Benjamin Griffin, probably the son.

August 1, 1712, Paid to my onkel, Joseph Griffin, four pounds.

May 25, 1713, Then reckoned with my unkol, Joseph Griffin; due to him ten pounds, seven shillings.

August 31, 1700, James Trowbridge, Thomas Oliver and John Staples, a "committee appointed by Hon. James Russell, Esq., Judge of Probate for the County of Middlesex, for dividing the estate of Nathaniel Hammond, late of Newtowe," report the following division:

To the widdow for her thirds £170-02-6
To the eldest son, Nathaniel Hammond, for his duboll share 85-02-6
To Thomas Hammond, the second son 42-11-3
To eldest daughter, Mary Hammond 42-11-3

To the third daughter, Elizabeth Hammond, 42-11-3
To the fourth daughter, Easter Hammond 42-11-3

May 6, 1702, Nathaniel and Thomas Hammond, Samuel Truesdale and Elizabeth, his wife, Samuel Prentice and Esther, his wife, Mary and Sarah Hammond, children of Nathaniel Hammond, late of Newton, agreed that the share of their sister, Hannah, deceased, in her minority, should go to their brother, Thomas. In this agreement they mention "Mary Williams, our mother, widow of our father, Nathaniel Hammond."

Nathaniel married Mary Griffin Abt 1670. Mary (daughter of Richard Griffin and Mary [--?--]) was born Abt 1650, Roxbury, Norfolk Co., MA; died 13 Oct 1732, Roxbury, Norfolk Co., MA. [Group Sheet]
