From Chris Stanga
John, I'm in Neillsville, Wisconsin (for the past 3 years). I grew up in Wichita, though ... spent 10 years in Kansas City and Lawrence, KS and then back to Wichita. I have thought of going to Pawpaw to see what I could find ... and plan to spend some time in Wichita to look for George McClelland's roots (a real brick wall). I want to have a good plan before I go to any of those places ... want to know exactly where I'll be going and what I'll be looking for!
Also found a Sadie Steadman in the Polk Directory for Des Moines, IA in 1897. I don't know if this is her (stormy marriage?)
My Mother [Delores Jean Hunt] said something about Sadie being birthed in a home where mothers were "sent" to have children away from their husbands. I don't know if this is fact or fiction. There was also a story about her living with two women ? cousins? in Lawrence, KS.
My Mother has a letter addressed to Miss Sadie Noble dated 1888. (2 years after she was married) The letter was sent from Independence?
My mother relates the following story about Sadie (what is true...who can tell?): Sadie was sent to live with Aunts in Chicago after her parents were killed in a buggy accident. Apparently, the family was well off... rich enough to go to Paw Paw for "lying in". Mom thinks her parents were from Chicago. Sadie ran away from these Aunts with her sister (Mom wonders if the sister
was Hannah) after discovering they had not been forthright about the family estate. Mom thought they ran away to Kansas City and then perhaps Lawrence, KS? Mom wonders if this is where Sadie met George since Lawrence was on the
railroad route (he worked for the railroad). The sister, Mom thought, went back to Chicago.
One of Sadie's daughters, Mae, married Henry Isendorf (reportedly one of many marriages) and at one time worked on a steamboat on Mississippi. (She sounds colorful!)
Again, this is all oral history. Mom says that Sadie was always very closed mouth... said little.
Anna Mae was Sadie's 1st born "wild child" according to my Mother. Perhaps married several times. George Nelson Henry is her child according to my Mother. I never met her and she was never spoken of.
George Walter Hunt (child of Sadie) died young either due to Scarlet fever or Typhoid. We have a picture of him. He was the adored son.
Lloyd Russell Hunt (child of Sadie Hunt) - I grew up with him...married to Edith.
Roy Herbert Hunt (child of Sadie Hunt) - my Grandfather. Worked for and retired from the Missouri Pacific Railroad as a freight train conductor. Schooled through the 8th grade but then had to work so his brothers could go to college. I don't believe they had children, or if they did, they were deceased in infancy. Married Glady's Pearl Hobbs (for whom we have a full and upright! geneology lol)
Harold Harry Hunt (child of Sadie Hunt) was an accountant (or maybe bookkeeper would be more accurate). I also grew up with him... was married to Helen who died of emphysema. They had no children but loved dachsunds.
Delores Jean Hunt is my mother... still living. She was the only live born child of Gladys and Roy (Grandma and Grandpa).
A letter referencing where Sadie and George lived... they owned several lots on their block and sold one behind them to Gladys Pearl and Roy Hunt with adjoining back yards.
George and Sadie's marriage license from 1886 shows he was 22 years old then which confirms 1864 birth year.
The 1900 census shows George and Sadie's family at that time and where they lived. Of note, they lived down the street from a brothel.
Social Security SS-5 forms for Uncle Lloyd and Uncle Harold: I was hoping they would give me a clue regarding George. I can find nothing regarding his geneology. The story is that his Father was killed when an axe flew off the handle and into his leg with his death resulting from infection and sepsis. The children were farmed out. George was also adopted out (I don't
know how official these things are) ... and at some point, per my mother, came to live with a veteranarian as an apprentice. This man was abusive to him and he was taken in by some other family. So, I do not know what his real
last name is. He was born in KY.
Incidentally, all of these Hunts were big Masons. I don't know if there would be records from that angle or not.
It's interesting to note that George and Sadie seemed to have had alot in common!
My Mom sent me a copy of the letter she had to Sadie "Noble" from 1883. Again, the letter is addressed to Ms. Sadie M. Noble, dated 1883 from Independence. The interesting part is that in the letter her friend refers to the fact that they cannot call her "Sarah Ann" any more. So, for some reason, she must have stopped going by Sarah Ann and (although her friend refers to her as Sadie throughout the letter). Her friend also refers to Sadie having been "there"
By the way ... the letter refers to the fact that Sadie used to live in Independence ... and it is Independence, KS. I am doing a line-by-line search of Independence Township, Montgomery County, KS in the 1880 census to see if I can see either Sadie Noble or Ellen Powell (the friend who sent Sadie a letter).
