In the almost unreadable 1881 census, he seems to be listed as a grandson of Henry and Emily. As only children listed seem to be Mary, age 18, and Henry, age 14, I am assuming he is a illegimate child of Mary.

Military:
He enlisted at age 18 into th Royal Warwickshire Reg't. He was discharged after 17 years in service on 11 May 1916 and received a pension. He lists as his next of kin when he enlisted as Uncle Henry Mobbs and Grandmother Emily Mobbs, both of 9 Rouel Road, Bermondsey.

He server in the army for seven years, including time in Africa during the Boer War. In 1905, he was transferred to the Army Reserves. He was mobilized in 1914 with outbreak of World War I. He was wounded in action at Ypres and Boulogne
