    *Thomas Tarbell II, b. 1642, England or Watertown, MA, d. Apr. 26, 1678, Charlestown, MA, son of Thomas and Mary Tarbell. He M. June 30 or July 11, 1666 to HANNAH or ANNA LONGLEY, b. abt. 1642, d. Dec. 29, 1680, Groton, MA, dau. of William and Joanna (Goffe) Longley. 4 chi. (Groton Register) Thomas 2 Tarbell, died at age 36 of Smallpox. His wife only lived two more years, having lost her husband, and several others of the family to this epidemic at Charlestown, Mass. The children were young, and must have been raised by other members of the family.

    Thomas-2 Tarbell was, with his father, an original proprietor of the Town of Groton, in 1664. He married Anna Longley in 1666. After the destruction of the town in King Phillip's War, the famous Indian War, he took his family to Charlestown, where they lived with the family of Samuel Leman, who se wife was a sister of Anna or Hannah Longley Tarbell. It was there that Thomas-2 died of smallpox in 1678. His widow, who had joined the Charlestown church in 1677, was appointed administrator of the estate. Unfortunately Anna died just 2 years later, a month after her father, and her estate was administered by her mother, Joanna, and her brother, Wm. Longley, Jr., though no settlement of either estate has been found. Of the children of this family, there were only 4, 2 girls and 2 boys , but one son, William died in 1693, apparently unmarried.

After the destruction of that town during King Philip's war, Thomas and his family removed to Charlestown, where they lived in the home of Samuel Leman, whose wife was a sister to Hannah. On Oct 28, 1677, Anna, wife of ThomasTarbell, Jr., was admitted to the church in Charlestown. Thomas died there of the smallpox, 27 Apr 1678, and administration upon his estate was granted to his widow on 18 Dec 1678. She did not long survive him, but died at Groton on 29 Dec 1680, a month after the death of her father, William Longley. Her mother, Joanna Longley, and brother, William Longley, were appointed administrators of her estate, 5 Apr 1681, but no settlement of either estate has been found."

    Notes for Thomas Tarbell: Thomas was an original proprietor of Groton, after the destruction of the town in King Philip's War. He moved to Charlestown, MA where he died of smallpox during the same epidemic that killed his father. Notes for Hannah Longley: NEHGS, Vol. 61., p. 70.

    From Rupert Tarbell: Thomas Tarbell was born in Watertown in 1644, son of Thomas and Mary. Thomas was a proprietor of Groton. In June 1666 he married Hannah or Anna Longley, the daughter of William and Joanna Longley of Groton. Probably in the fall of 1675, the family moved to Charlestown. Groton was destroyed during King Phillip's War. Hannah or Anna joined the Church in Charlestown on 28 Oct 1677.

    King Phillip's War lasted only from July to August of 1675. However, all of central and southeastern New England were involved. It was caused by the encroachment of white settlers on the Indian fishing and hunting grounds. It was named for King Phillip (Matacomet) an Indian Chief and was brought to an end by the Chief's death.

    Thomas Tarbell, of this narrative, for service in King Phillips War, was awarded lot 63 in Narraganset #6. It is unlikely he ever built a home there. Narraganset #6 is now Templeton, Worcester Co. MA. It was common practice to grant or award land to soldiers who fought in these wars rather than paying them in money. Thomas's brothers John Tarbell and William Tarbell also fought in King Phillip's War.

    Thomas died of small pox in 1678 as did his father Thomas.

    Administration of the estate of Thomas was granted to his widow on 18 Dec 1678. She did not long survive him, but died at Groton 29 Dec 1680. Her death occurred a month after her father William Longley died. Her mother, Joanna Longley and her brother, William were appointed administrators of her estate on 5 Apr 1681 but no settlement of either estate has been found.
