    "Rev. Charles Lowell's life has been so graphically pictured by his daughter, Mrs. Mary Lowell Putnam, to which we have already referred, that we will not attempt in our brief record more than an outline. He was born on August 15, 1782, in Boston, Mass. He recieved his first education at grammar school in Roxbury, where his parents were then living. He entereed Harvard College as a member of the sophmore class in 1797, having previously attended Phillips Academy in Andover, Mass. He took his degree on July 16, 1800. He studied law under his brother for one year at the desire of his father. Finding it distasteful, he was not opposed to his wishes to enter the ministry. He completed his studies in Edinburgh and travelled extensively in Europe. His wife was a great-great-granddaughter of Robert and Mary (Hoel) Cutts of Kittery, Maine, through her mother. The account of his ministrations as clergyman can only be alluded to here. He was not only successful but well-beloved. All his children who have attained to years of maturity, have achieved distinction, the most notable being his youngest son James Russell Lowell, the famous poet, literateur, stateman, and orator.

    "On March 30, 1850, Mrs. Harriet B. S. Lowell was suddenly taken away from her family by death. She was much beloved, and it is said that her youngest son inherited his poetical talent from her. Mr. Lowell survived her eleven years, dying on January 10, 1861."

    Charles Lowell became a clergyman. His wife, Harriet Spence was VERY clever.

    Elizabeth Pickering Gardner had a lovely nature. She was never sick a day till she died - never went out for exercise. Her husband, John C. Gray was an absent-minded scholar.

    Mary Lowell Gardner died of consumption; she was bright and piquant. Her husband, Francis Lowell, had a beautiful character.

    John Lowell Gardner was very witty - shrewd in business - left $10,000,000, an enormous fortune at that time. His wife had money - was nervous.

    Sarah Russell Gardner had a lovely nature, was devoted to her step children. quiet and intellectual. Her husand, Horace Gray, brother of John, had a clever brain.

    George Gardner's wife Helen Read was beautiful, with an open generous nature. She died of heart trouble.

    Notes:

    Rev. Rob't T. S. Lowell was a graduate of Harvard in the class of 1833, and, after acquiring a medical education, became a clergyman in the Episcopal Church. He was established in 1846 and 1847 in Newfoundland. It was at that time he gathered the materials for his novel entitled "The New Priest of Conception Bay". This was issued in 1858, and again in 1863 was reissued, with illustrations by Darley. In 1860 he published a volume of poems entitled "Fresh hearts that failed three thousand years ago." From 1869 to 1873 he was head master of St. Mark's School at Southboro, Mass. Afterwards he was Professor of Latin in Union College. These are his chief works and positions, although he did very much, and was very highly esteemed as a writer and teacher. His death occurred on the 12th of September, 1891, a month after the death of his brother James Russell Lowell.

    "After Maria White Lowell died, her husband married Miss Frances Dunlap who died some years later. The wives of this eminent man were both singularly fitted for his companiions. Indeed his first wife was gifted as a writer of beautiful poems. Her husband graduated from Harvard in 1838, and his whole life detail has become so much the property of the world at large that it is unnecessary to add anything to what has been written. His poems and prose works will live in the memory of all who read them; few are born to fill such eminent positions. Statesman, diplomat, litterateur, poet, essayist, critic, and professor! All these he filled and when his eartly career ended in August, 1891, of none could it be more truly said the whole world mourned his loss."

    Elizabeth C. (Lowell) Dutton was short in stature, and good. Her husband Waren Dutton was a lawyer. After the death of Mrs. James D. Russell they moved to Nonantum, afterwards they built a square house on Brighton Road, Longwood.

    James Russell who took the name of James Dutton Russell, born Nov. 22, 1816, died Feb 27, 1848. Married Nov. 4, 1835 Sarah Ellen Hooper, born Nov. 22, 1816, died Feb 27, 1848 Harvard College 1829, admitted to Suffolk Bar, but did not practice. After the death of his wife he lost heart, and died in Longwood a few months before Warren went to war. His wife was the daughter of William Hooper and was most delightful. She died when her oldest child was eight years old, of cancer.)

    The children of James Dutton Russell and Sarah Ellen Hooper were

    Ellen a fine woman, She married in 1866 George Barnard, after he returned from the war. (Cancer).

    Warren - blond hair. Entered Harvard College, left after one year, went to Amherst, soon left. He was killed in battle.

    Frank - Handsome, reckless, ran away from home at the age of 17 and joined the New York Zouaves as private, found badly wounded in a hospital. Died of exhaustion after the war, of consumption.

    Elise, very tall and handsome, dark hair and grey eyes. Married Henry Dalton.
