Notes:
"John La Farge (1835-1910) was a distinguished American painter. He is often called 'the father of mural painting in America.' His greatest
mural, painted in 1885, is the chancel of the Church of the Ascension in New York City. In 1876, he decorated Trinity Church in Boston, his first important work. La Farge also attracted praise for his bright water colors, his work in stained-glass windows, and as a teacher of young painters.
"La Farge was born in New York City, of French parentage. He studied painting in Paris, then returned to New York City to study law. But he disliked this subject, and went to Newport, R.I., to work with painter William M. Hunt. La Farge later traveled and painted in Japan and the South Seas."

Will of John LaFarge
The will of John LaFarge, the eminent artist who died at the Butler Hospital a few weeks ago, was filed for probate to the Probate Court of this city on Tuesday. The will had been in possession of the court for some time, under seal, with a request that it be opened and filed on December 27. The will is dated April 23 last, and was drawn by John LaFarge. It is an unusual document and contains unusual directions for the disposition of the property. It is understood that the family acquiesces entirely in the desire of the late artist to distribute the estate, although none of the members of the family are mentioned in the will.
Grace E. Bartles of Larchmont, N. Y., is named executrix, with the request that she be not required to furnish bonds. Practically the entire distribution of the estate is left to the judgment of the executrix.
The will provides that all drawings of the testator be offered to the Metropolitan, Carnegie, Worcester and Seattle art museums for a sum to be determined by the executrix, and if the offers are not accepted by the museums named, the drawings are to be sold at public auction. The printings of the artist are to be disposed of in the same manner, with the exception that private sale is provided instead of public auction in the event that the museums do not care to purchase the paintings at the price named by the executrix.
The books, studio effects and all other articles of personal property belonging to the testator are to be disposed of by the executrix in the most advantageous manner and the proceeds derived from such sales are to be distributed by her among certain persons named in a separate paper accompanying the will. Provision is made that the royalties from the books of the testator shall be paid to the executrix, who is to continue their publication.
All letters are to be looked over by the executirx who is empowered to destroy them or dispose of them in any way she sees fit. The testator expressed the wish that all expenses of his interment, the building of a tomb and his debts be paid from the proceeds of the sale of his various effects, and the remainder to be distributed among such museums and and other public institutions as his executrix may designate.

D. and Frances "Fanny" Sergeant) was born 26 Feb 1839, Newport, Newport Co., RI; died 2 May 1925, Newport, Newport Co., RI; was buried Aft 2 May 1925, Morningside Cemetery, Newport, Newport Co., RI. Obituary:
Noted Artist Dies, 72, In Mt. Carmet
Bancel LaFrage was son of Famous Painter, John; Decorated Many Churches in Career
Hamden, Aug. 14. --(Special.) -- Bancel LaFarge, noted artist and mural painter, died Suday at his Mt. Carmet home after an illness of several months. He was 72 years old.
The funeral will be held Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. in St. Aeden's Church, New Haven. Burial will be in Newport, R. I.
Mr. LaFarge was born in Newport, son of the famous artist, John LaFarge, and Margaret (Perry) LaFarge, who was the granddaughter of Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry.
For about 10 years Bancel LaFarge devoted himself to the affairs of his family and was an assistant to the late John LaFarge, in the latter's studio on Tenth Street, New York City. In 1903, some time after he was married, he took his family abroad, where he lived for 12 years.
Pursuing in Paris and elsewhere the study of drawing and painting, he prepared himself for the execution of four large alter-pieces in the Church of the Blessed Sacrament, Providence, R. I.
Worked in Mosaics.
Actively interested in every form of art, his greatest inspiration and delight were Byzantine mosaics. This special influence can be traced in much of his work, not only in his Providence paintings but also in such decorations for St. Charles Seminary, Catonsville, Md., his series of mosaic alter pieces for the National Shrine in Washington, D. C., and finally his most important work, the apse of Trinity College, in Washington. This mosaic, covering the large semidome over the altar, and prepresenting the "Coronation of the Virgin", a subject inspired from Dante's Earthly Paradise and the Vision of Ezekiel, is a remarkably beautiful and authenitic use of the material.
Among other works in mural decoration is a large painting on the apse of Sacred Heart Church, St. Paul, Minn., "Christ Appearing to his Disciples at the Lake of Tiberius", and another decoration in the same church, representing the prophets, Moses and Isaiah. He also executed a lunette for the New Haven Public Library. A series of stained glass windows in the Cathedral at St. Paul, Minn., and a window representing the Virgin in the Church of Our Lady, Mt. Carmel, are examples of his work in that medium.
One of the marked characteristics of Bancel LaFarge was his deep love and understanding of nature, a factor which palyed a significant part of his life, and which is evidenced by countless smaller works in oil, water-color and pastel.
In 1898 her married Mabel Hooper, daughter of Edward Hooper, treasurer of Harvard Universitty and art patron.
Received Many Honors.
He was a member of the American Institute of Arts and Letters, honorary member of the American Institute of Architects, member of the National Society of Mural Painters, former president of the Liturgical Arts Society, associate fellow of Davenport College, Yale University; President of the Sleeping Giant Park Association, and a member of the Connecticut State Commission of Sculptures.
He was also a member of the jury in the national competition sponsored by the United Stets Treasury Department for the decoration of the government buildings in Washington. His clubs included the Century Association and St. Anthony Club, New York City; and the Social Club, the Dissenters, the Elizabethan Club and the Graduates Club in New Haven.
He leaves his wife, Mabel Hopper LaFarge; four sons, L. Bancel, Edward H., Henry A., and Thomas S. LaFarge; two brothers, C. Grant LaFarge and Rev. John LaFarge, C.J., and two sisters, Mrs. E. H. Childs of New York City and Miss Margaret LaFarge of Newport.
John married Mabel Hooper 8 Sep 1898, Cambridge, Middlesex Co., MA. Mabel (daughter of Edward William "Ned" Hooper and Fanny Hudson Chapin) was born 26 Jun 1875, Cambridge, Middlesex Co., MA; died 1944, Hartford, Hartford Co., CT. [Group Sheet]

Margaret Hamill
Active community volunteer
LAWRENCE — Margaret LaFarge Hamill, a longtime resident of Lawrence, died Feb. 20 at home. She was 97.
She was born in Seattle, where members of her mother's family were pioneers. Because her mother was ill with tuberculosis, she lived in a Seattle convent from the age of 7, later attending Sacred Heart schools in New York City and Noroton, Conn. On a class trip, she attended the canonization of Saint Madeleine Sophie, to her a memorable event when she kissed the pope's ring.
She was an early supporter of the Stuart Country Day School of the Sacred Heart. Four of her grandchildren later attended the school.
She took pride in her farm and garden on Carter Road, where she managed a large garden and raised chickens during World War II.
She was a member and past president of the Garden Club of Princeton and a member of the Garden Club of America, where she received the Club Medal of Merit in 1993.
She served for many years on the Ladies Auxiliary of the Isabella McCosh Infirmary of Princeton University.
She was a life member of the Colony Club in New York, where she was the second oldest surviving member.
In 1990, she published a book of her father's account of his experiences in the Alaska gold rush of 1898 and of his early years in Seattle.
She is survived by her sons, William H.B. Hamill, Samuel M. Hamill Jr. and Oliver LaFarge Hamill, all of Princeton; grandchildren Sarah Hamill of Berkeley, Calif., Jane M. LaF. Hamill of New York, Andrew LaF. Hamill of Boston and William H.B. Hamill Jr. and Natalie Hamill, both of Princeton.
The funeral was held Friday at St. Paul's Roman Catholic Church, Princeton.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Stuart Country Day School of the Sacred Heart, Stuart Road, Princeton, NJ 08540.
Arrangements were by Mather-Hodge Funeral Home, Princeton.
