Memorial Services Are Held in Supreme Court
Geneseo, Nov. 15 -- Memorial services for Frank H. Stedman, Livonia lawyer who died last Thursday, were read and spread over the minutes of the November term of the Livingston county supreme court Monday by order of Judge Nathan D. Lapham, presiding justice. The memorial was in the form of a resolution, drawn up and adopted by the Livingston County Bar association, and presented in court by the association secretary, Wm. J. Flynn, of Mount Morris.
The resolution reads:
"The Livingston County Bar association thanks Divine Providence that they are permitted to come into this forum, of a free people, to present this memorial to their beloved Legion member.
"Frank H. Stedman of Livonia departed this life on the 9th day of November, 1939, in the 48th year of his life. During nearly all of his adult life, when not in the serive of his country, he daily moved among us, representing all that is best in citizenship, the ethics of the Bar, and Christian character.
"Frank H. Stedman was a good lawyer. He was a good lawyer because he worked prodigiously and painstakingly. For every dispute he brought to court, he adjusted one hundred amicably; enabled to do this by reason of his great knowledge of human character and his innate sense of fairness. These great gifts made him a marked man in his community and at the Bar. His counsel was eagerly sought on the street, in the office and at his home, and was freely given without thought of personal aggrandizement.
"In his community and county life, he was a trusted leader, giving the best of his great talents for the benefit of his towns-people, his church, and in the wider field for party and the welfare of his country.
"This association desires to place on record its profound sorrow at the sudden termination of the life of this outstanding lawyer, citizen and friend.
"To this end, we ask that this memorial be spread upon the minutes of this court, and that the clerk be directed to transmit a copy thereof to Mr. Stedman's family."
Following the reading of the resolution, high tributes were paid by Judge lapham and Austin W. Erwin.
Obituary:
Frank Stedman's Memory Honored By Large Attendance at Funeral, Great Wealth of Floral Pieces
"Dear Lord and Father of mankind,
Forgive our fev'rish ways;
Recloth us in our rightful mind;
In purer lives Thy service find,
In deeper rev'rence, praise."
Those meaningful lines by Whittier and the succeeding four stanzas, with the beautiful hymn tune to which they were put, will long be in the memory of many of Frank Stedman's friends. As one of a mixed quartet and as a soloist, he had often sung them in church. Last Sunday they were read at his funeral from the same platform.
Singing in the choir as usual a week ago Sunday, taken seriously ill that night, rushed to the Veterand' Hospital in Batavia as an emergency case, gone in four days, services held for him just a week from the last time he appeared in public. So very quickly was life supplanted by death, happiness changed to grief, plans of family and associated disrupted. And now, as he so often read and heard from Ecclesiates in Masonic third degree work, "the mourners go about the streets."
Frank Harvey Stedman was born in Livonia Mary 4, 1891, oldest of the three children of the late William B. and Etta Francis Stedman. he gained his schooling here, graduating in the class of 1910, and then taught rural school in Springwater for a time. In 1911 he began reading law in the office of Scott W. Crane of Livonia, continued his study there for six years, and in 1917 was admitted to the bar. The professional association which had started in 1911 was immediately consummated into a partnership under the firm name of Crane & Stedman, and was interrupted only by the latter's death.
Frank Stedman's interests and activities were manifold.
From early childhood he was associated with church life in its various phases. He was brought up, religiously speaking, in the old Livonia Baptist church, of which he was a member and in which he was an important factor as a boy and man. When the Baptist church changed to Congregational fifteen years ago, he became a charter member of that organization and continued his activity as before. Up through the years, from early Sunday school days, he was one of the "stand-bys" of the church, officially and otherwise, and since young manhood his contributions had included his gifted bass voice. At the time of his death he was a trustee, which office he had held for years. His activity in both the Baptist and Congregational churches is best suggested by the record books of these societies, in which his name appears so frequently.
His professional life, since admittance to the bar, covered a period of twnety-two years. During this time he had gained the well-merited reputation of being a wise counsellor and a legal advisor of sound judgement, sympathetic and understanding in his consideration of troublesome problems, highky regarded as man and colleague.
Masonically he had wide acquaintance. It was just a quarter century ago that he joined Livonia lodge No. 778. In 1931 he served as master and during the Masonic year of 1934-35 was honored by the office of district deputy of the Livingston district. At the conclusion of his term he continued active in various Masonic capactities, taking particular interest in the work of the county Ruling Masters' association.
Politics claimed considerable of his attention during the last few years. Always a Republican, active in local political matters, he was elected in 1935 chairman of the Livingston county Republican committee, an office to which he was re-elected for a second term in 1937, and for a third term only a month before his death.
He was vice-commander of Harrison-Lee post of the American Legion, member of the Livingston County Bar association, belonged to the fire department, and served on no end of committees of varying natures.
Funeral services Sunday afternoon at the Congregational church were very largely attended. Masons numbering upwards of 100 were present, likewise several prominent political leaders, and these with other friends taxed the capacity of the building. The number and beauty of the floral pieces -- over 100 -- were of themselves eloquent evidence of friendships and the sense of loss so keenly felt.
The Rev. L. D. Graves, pastor of the Congregational church, officiated at the church. Commital services at Union cemetery were in charge of the Masonic order, at the conclusion of which the American flag which draped the coffin was presented, according to custom, to the next of kin -- Mrs. Stedman. The eight bearers were four cousins, Raymond Francis and Frank Kinney of Rochester, William Francis of Lima, Harland Francis of Geneseo, Walter Mooney of Livinia, George Ragsdale of Union Springs, and Emory Thayer of South Lima.
Surviving are the wife, Ruth Topping Stedman, who was married in 1928; two daughters, Ruth Elizabeth, 8, and Esther Frances, 6; a sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Brown, and a brother, Delbert Stedman, both of Livonia; a niece and a pephew, Phyllis and Gordon Brown.
Frank Stedman's death is a sad blow not only to his family, but to the community, to his profession and to the many enterprises with which he was connected, The suggen illness, the quick passing of this prominent man, still under 50, make his going the harder to accept and the more difficult to realize.
But perhaps he could now sing with greater understanding than ever the fourth stanza of that Whittier poem-hym:
"Drop thy still dews of quietness,
Till all oar strivings cease:
Take from our souls the strain and stress.
And let our ordered lives confess
The beauty of Thy peace."
