Obituary:
Hyrum Nelden Hurst 1920 ~ 2007
Hyrum Nelden Hurst, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend, passed away peacefully at Rocky Mountain Care, Tuesday, June 26, 2007, in West Valley City, Utah.
Born September 30, 1920 to Hyrum Jackson and Elzada Martineau in Idaho Falls, Idaho; later divorced. Sealed to Albert Leroy Hurst and his mother September 19, 1925, in the Manti LDS Temple.
Married Susannah Holler January 9, 1943; later divorced. Married his eternal sweetheart, Virginia Martin, on July 29, 1955, in Seattle, Washington, later solemnized in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. She preceded him in death on May 16, 1999.
He was a High Priest in the LDS Church and served in many callings, but will be remembered best as a dedicated and faithful Home Teacher. He had the special honor of having been the Home Teacher of Elder Gordon B. Hinckley, then a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles of the LDS Church.
He graduated from Payson High School, Class of 1938. He joined the United States Air Force in 1940 where he served a distinguished 21-year career, retiring honorably as a Captain in 1961. He was especially proud of his military service and veteran status. He was employed as a machinist at McGee & Hogan for nine years and later as maintenance foreman for Wasatch Chemical Company where, in November, 1971, he was severely burned and blinded in an industrial accident. With his amazing positive attitude in the face of such a life-changing event, he attended the University of Utah from 1973-77 and graduated Magna Cum Laude with a BS in Health Science. He was also elected to the Phi Kappa Phi National Honor Society. Following graduation, he worked as a counselor at the Work Activity Center until his retirement. Dad loved to read, especially history, and went through a library's worth of books on tape. He loved music and had an extensive collection. He loved dogs, and while he had his eyesight, he enjoyed photography, building model airplanes and trains and collecting stamps. In his later years he endured numerous health problems with his usual positive outlook and quiet dignity and grace. He alone understood the secret that the only way to properly care for diabetes was to eat as much chocolate as possible and NEVER pass up dessert - that's what insulin is for! He dearly loved his family and was a living sermon and inspiration to them and a true example of what it means to "endure to the end." He was fiercely independent. Uncompromising integrity, unyielding faith, and a positive attitude to rise above whatever life dishes out were his greatest legacy to his grateful family. We celebrate with him at the joyful reunion he is now having with his eternal companion and the vision he is once again able to enjoy.
He is survived by his sons, Marty, Kevin (Nancy); daughters, Betsy, Diane; daughter-in-law, Leslie, nine grandchildren; Adam, Sherridan (Eric), Mallorie, Brian, Danny, Aaron, Harmony, Christopher, and Kimberlee; brother, Elden (Joy); sister, Mary; and many wonderful friends and neighbors throughout the years.
Also, a special thanks to the staffs of Cottonwood Creek, Alpine Hospice, and Rocky Mountain Care for the gentle, loving care they have provided.
Graveside services will be held on Friday, June 29, 2007 at 11:00 a.m. at the Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park (Sunrise Section). Friends and family may call at the Wasatch Lawn Mortuary, 3401 South Highland Drive from 10:00-10:45a.m. prior to services.
"WE LOVE YOU, DAD!"
