    • According to Elizabeth (Steadman) Raynes, June 2013:

      "Maria and her three children returned to Stafford [after William deserted]. She gave birth to Louisa in 1862 and Fanny in 1865 with William named as the father when he is described as a tinman and a whitesmith respectively. In 1868 the family spent a considerable amount of time in the workhouse where Maria gives birth to a son, John, his birth certificate does not show the name of his father. She later leaves the workhouse and goes to live with her parents.

      "On the 1871 census she states that she is a widow, but she has two more daughters and a son; twins Maria and James in 1872 (James died in infancy) and Ellen in 1874; no father's name is given on their birth certificates, but William is named as their father at all their baptisms at St.Mary's Church, Stafford.

      "Maria died at Lichfield in 1903 widow of William journeyman carpenter.

      "I have sent for one or two death certificates over the years, but I still don't know what happened to William."
