    Notes
    • From Elizabeth (Steadman) Raynes, July 2013:

"Two years ago a distant cousin on my mother's side, whom I had helped a great deal with the Burton research, knew of my frustration in trying to trace William, and one day he came across someone who was researching the Steadman family. He contacted her on my behalf and asked her if I could get in touch with her via her personal email rather than Ancestry and she agreed. I am printing what she told me and, of course, I was able to fill in a lot of gaps for her. Sadly,I have tried to contact her again two or three times, but she has never responded, and I have no way of knowing whether she has died or just not felt well enough to get back to me.
      ___

      "Dear Elizabeth,

'It is so lovely to contact someone at long last about my father's maternal family. My maternal g.g.grandparents were George (a shoemaker) and Sarah Banks of Stafford. Their daughter Maria, my g.grandmother married William Steadman in May 1855. He was a sergeant in the 2nd Regiment of The Staffordshire Militia. William's father was John a miner. I have no knowledge of William's mother.

"According to the 1861 census, Maria was living with her mother and father at 6 Victoria Terrace, St Mary's Stafford with three of her children William 5, Sarah Anne 3, and George Henry 1. Census returns for 1871 shows Maria, now head of the family and a widow at 12 Queen Street, St Mary's Stafford with Frederick?14, Sarah Ann 13, George 11, born in Ireland at The Curragh Camp, Louise 8, Fanny 5, and John 2. From this I have deduced that Maria may have been widowed sometime between 1869 and 1871.

"I did contact the Staffordshire Regiment at Lichfield to try and find out about William and was referred to the Staffordshire Records Office. I have not as yet followed this up as my husband and I have not been in the best of health during the past 5 yrs, and he is now unable to drive, and I have never passed a test, so we have to rely on public transport which is not the very best if you need to travel more than a mile or so.

"1881 Census shows Maria (widow still at 12 Queen Street) with Fanny 15, John 11, 2 new daughters??? Maria 8, and Ellen 6. I will leave you to make up your own mind about this, but I suppose that Maria may have taken these 2 daughters in from her older daughters or sons. I don't suppose we will ever find out.

"By 1891 Maria had moved to 8, Wilton Street, Wolstanton, Cross Heath, Wolstanton and Burslem, Newcastle-under-Lyme with Ellen 16.

"I have established that on 15th Sept.1894, Ellen gave birth to a daughter Elsie May Steadman (father unknown) at the Union Workhouse, Chell. Ellen, as stated previously was my paternal grandmother. She married Frederick Wright, and they lived in St.Michael's, Lichfield before Ellen eventually moved to Pershore Street, Digbeth, Birmingham. They had at least 4 children. Ellen was widowed in Sept.1913. In 1916, she married my grandfather Thomas Gill (of Lichfield), and they had 3 children Katherine 1916, Thomas Henry 1917 (my father) and Audrey c.1921, all now deceased.

"My father was a Pilot Officer flying Lancaster Bombers during WW11, and, unfortunately, on the night of 5th/6th Sept.1943, he was shot down, and he and his crew perished. I never knew him as he was killed before my birth in November 1943. My mother Mollie is still alive and is now 90 yrs old.
      ___

"As I have mentioned, my father was ill for several years before he died, and I was very close to him, and, before his illness, we used to go everywhere together, and I had remembered that he had once told me that he had had an aunt with one arm who had kept a boarding house in Birmingham which I mentioned to Jane (Ellen's granddaughter). This was her reply.
      ___

      "Hi Elizabeth

"Thank you so much for all the information contained in your last two emails. There is an extraordinary amount of information to digest so it may take me sometime to digest it all and sort into the right compartments. As I explained in my last reply, I have been very poorly and am still undergoing chemotherapy so please be patient with me as some days I do not even switch on the laptop, and, when I do, concentration is difficult. However, I will try to keep in touch.

"For your information Ellen (granny Gill) did have only one arm .She was badly burned at about 2 yrs of age, and her arm was very disfigured, as was the side of her head and from memory one ear was missing. At about the age of 10, she was conveyed by horse and cart from Staffordshire to the Queen's Hospital in Birmingham where she underwent surgery to have the disfigured arm amputated. I did not know she had kept a boarding house. Was this in Lichfield or Birmingham? I have been reliably informed that her first husband, Frederick Wright committed suicide; do you know if this is true. I guessing that as suicide was a criminal offence in those days the matter would have been reported on and that there may be a Coroner's inquest.

"I have copies of William and Maria's wedding certificate, Ellen's birth certificate (no father) and that of her first born at UW Chell. I also have Ellen's marriage certificate to Frederick Wright on which it is declared that William Steadman is Ellen's deceased father.
      ____________

"I bitterly regret that we couldn't have known one another as I had hoped that, once we had made contact, we might be able to meet. Sadly, that hasn't proved to be the case. Those emails were written in June 2011, and I haven't heard from her since.

      "Regards Elizabeth"
