    • LEMUEL COWLES, son of Daniel Cowles and Esther Rhodes, was born on August 17, 1776 in Kensington, CT. He died on December 1, 1815. (Monument, Lovely St. Cemetery, Unionville, CT,  erected in 1871 by Deacon Walter H. Cowles to the memory of his grandparents Daniel and Esther and a number of their children and grandchildren. (C-330).

He married Esther Gridley (Seth, Ebenezer, Thomas, Thomas, Thomas the Hartford settler).  She was born on May 31, 1774 in Farmington, CT.  She died Feb. 17 or 25 (Church Record), 1823, at the age of 47.  She was the daughter of Seth and Esther Blakesley Gridley of Farmington.  Seth Gridley was a Revolutionary War Soldier who drew a pension until his death in 1813. (C-330)

Lemuel Cowles was considered "a model of energy and enterprise. He used to be up at 3 o'clock in the morning, get his horses and oxen fed, and his men started at 4 a.m.  His farm was quite large but he would buy up corn when cheap and store it for higher prices, and borrow money at 4 % and lend it at 6%.  He did not spare himself and died in his prime." (39) (p330 Cowles Gen).  He lived on Lovely St., Avon, CT., where his children were probably all born (C-330).

Six of their children died young.

Lemuel and Esther had 8 children: Laura (d. at 15), Walter (died at 4 mos), Walter Hamilton, Narcissa (died age 2), Cynthia Charlotte (died at 2 mos), Edward, Nancy (died age 10), and Adelia (died age 3). Only Walter Hamilton and Edward lived to grow up. (C-330).
