- From: "The Hendrick Genealogy" by Charles T. Hendrick, Chicopee Falls, Massachusetts, 1923
James Hendrick of North Kingston, RI
"The origin of this family rests in dim tradition."
"Mrs. Elizabeth (Nason) Arnold, a granddaughter of James Hendrick, of North Kingston, writes: 'the family name was not Hendrick until during her grandfather's life time,' and maintains that the name originally was 'Andrick', and in the process of time, came to be Hendrick through carelessness in writing. She say the the 'first name of his ancestor is unknown, and where he came from we do not know. But he was a sea captain, and married Sarah Slocum, daughter of Peleg Slocum, of Slocum Corner, RI. He was killed by falling from a mast. Afterward his widow sailed alone on a voyage, and never returned. One son, James, was brought up by his mother's people.'
"Green Hendrick, a grandson, now living in Kingston, RI (1916), says he thinks that the name of the father of James Hendrick was 'James' also, and that he belonged on an English man-of-war vessel, that was stationed there at the time, and that he sailed away with his ship and nothing was ever heard from him afterward. He knew nothing as to who the mother was, but thinks James Hendrick was brought up by the Slocums.
"In the Slocum Genealogy, Vol. 1, page 78, is recorded a Sarah Slocum, born Mar. 11, 1752, in Jamestown, on Conanecut Island, RI, daughter of Samuel and Hannah (Bill) Slocum, who married Jan. 3, 1773, James Awick. This Sarah Slocum had a brother named Peleg. This looks like a possible solution to the problem. Thre is nothing further in the Slocum Genealogy about this Sarah Slocum.
"In the Vital Record of Jamestown, RI, is the following record: 'James Annick, mariner, and Sarah Slocum, married by Benjamin Underwood Warden, Jan. 3, 1773,' and again, 'James Church Annick, born Nov. 10, 1773, son of James and Sarah.' Therefore,, as James Hendrick, of North Kingston, RI was born Nov. 10, 1773, it looks very certain that this marriage was the marriage of the parents. The person who recorded the marriage may not have been acquainted with the groom, and as so many others, he probably pronounced his name with that broad Cockney English, or Dutch accent, and the surname was recorded phonetically, as many others were in those early days. The word 'serpent' was nearly always pronounced 'sarpent'.
"On the records of deeds in Wickford, RI, we find James Hendrick bought, Mar. 25, 1805, 86 acres of land, with dwelling house thereon situated in North Kingston, RI, and gave a mortgage on the place at the same date, to William Nichols. In the body of both the deed and the mortgage, his name is written'James Andrick,' but both he and his wife sign there own names to the mortgage 'James hendrick and Hannah hendrick' very plainly, proving what their real name was, thereby.
"In 1809 he sold some land to Howland Smith, and both he and his wife sign their own names, always using the small 'h', thus 'hendrick'. He recieved '51 good lawful dollars' for the land. Nov. 21, 1821, he sells 1/2 acre to his son-in-law, William H. Gardiner'
"The above proves, beyond the shadow of a doubt, that the surname was originally Hendrick. The scrivenor who wrote the marriage and birth records, and also the deed and mortgage, wrote it as pronounced. There are many instances of the same kind amoung the early records."
