Subject:  More on Lineage 1 and Lineage 2

      Ray,

I've seen the same thing on the MCDANIELS family- which is another indicator that the "James MCDANIEL, Clerk of the Court of Common Pleas and General Sessions" that signed the Revolutionary War Pension application of Archibald MCMAHAN- was the same man that was the father of Charity MCDANIEL, whose daughter, Susannah HUMPHRYS, married your John PAYNE, son of John PAYNE and Philadelphia AYERS- of Lineage 2. Archiblad MCMAHAN married Ann PAYNE of Lineage 1 as his pension application (and those of Lineage 1 who gave depositions on his behalf) proves.

As I have been pointing out, there are several things like this that all point to some form of relationship between your Lineage 2 and Lineage 1.

What we could REALLY USE at this point is for someone to come out of the woodwork who descends from another of John PAYNE's sons. John died in 1668/9 in Cople Parish, Westmoreland County, Virginia, and left a will naming sons JOHN and JAMES. We know nothing about James (as far as I know), and it appears that he may have died in 1701. Some folks have suggested that he m. Anne LEE, but I've seen nothing to substantiate the claim. If James did marry and left descendants that are alive today and one happened to be a male, we could just test them to see what we get- Lineage 1 or 2 DNA results. I suspect that if we had it, it would come back Lineage 1, indicating that the DNA sequence that we find for all members of Lineage 2 came through the line of his brother, John PAYNE (m. Elizabeth JOHNSTONE).

Records also indicate that this John PAYNE and Elizabeth JOHNSTONE had two sons, JOHN and WILLIAM:

"For 100 acres, part of a patent granted to John Payne, grandfather to the aforesaid William Jr. for 400 acres, and by the said John's will bequeathed to John Payne, father to the said William Payne Jr., and by his last will and testament given to his two sons John Payne and William Payne Jr."

I've never figured out why William PAYNE (m. Elizabeth POINDEXTER) was referred to as William JR. in that record- unless it was to distinguish him from an older relative of the same name. Yet there is no indication whatsoever in the records of any elder William PAYNE in this family line. However, there WAS an elder William PAYNE of the Lineage 1 family who was ALSO living in Westmoreland County that we know of.

According to the data that I have, William PAYNE, "JR." (that married Elizabeth POINDEXTER) was born ca. 1685 in Westmoreland County and died before 1735 in Hanover County. The will of his grandfather, John PAYNE (d. 1668/9), only mentions sons John and James as previously mentioned - so there does not appear to have been an "uncle William" in this line that might have been a William "SR." At the time of the record naming William "JR.", it would appear that the family was still living in Westmoreland County. At least it would appear that way as his father, John PAYNE, died there in 1697/8.

The only "elder" [and I emphasis elder because I know there were other William's in the area- but only one that I know to have been alive and elder than William "Jr."] William PAYNE in Westmoreland County was the son of John PAYNE (ca. 1615-1689/90) that had married Elizabeth POPE and appointed Richard LEE II and his wife, Lettice CORBIN, to be the guardians of his children by his will of 1697/8. What makes this all the more intriguing to me is that the LEE name appears again in conjuntion with this line as earlier I mentioned that there are people that have claimed that William "JR's." uncle JAMES had married an Ann LEE- and since he was from Westmoreland County, I naturally assume that any Ann LEE would have been a member of the Westmoreland County LEE family. And guess what? There WAS an Ann LEE in that family with a PAYNE connection to lineage 1- and she was a daughter of Richard LEE II and Lettice Corbin (and I would imagine well acquainted with the children of William PAYNE and Elizabeth POPE since her parents were their guardians). After the death of William PAYNE in 1697/8, his widow Elizabeth POPE married Daniel MCCARTY and then died about 1716. MCCARTY then married this Ann LEE [see "The PAYNES of Virginia; "The LEES of Virginia," Paul C. Nagal].

This "elder" William PAYNE (d. 1697/8) was also very likley the same William PAYNE that had been transported into DORCHESTER COUNTY, MARYLAND, in 1673, by John LEE- Richard LEE II's brother who died in that year. I mention this because Dorchester County is where our Paynes of Lineage 1 (descendants of Thomas Payne (d. 1673) of St. Mary's) emigrated from when they moved south into North Carolina and elsewhere, only to become confused with Lineage 2.

Anyway, it appears that William Jr. had a brother by the name of JOHN who we also know nothing about. DNA from one of his male descendants would also help to solve our problem... if one existed.

      Patrick

PATRICK... IN REGARDS TO YOUR ANALYSIS THAT WAS INCLUDED WITH THE CHART, WHICH IS HELPFUL BY THE WAY, YOU MADE A REFERENCE TO CHARITY MCDANIEL'S FATHER JAMES.  IT IS MY UNDERSTANDING THAT HER ENTIRE MCDANIEL FAMILY, ASIDE FROM HER, LEFT ORANGE COUNTY/NC AND WENT TO INDIANA TO LIVE, WITH HER REMAINING BEHIND DUE TO HER MARRIAGE TO WILLIAM HUMPHRYS ETC...  THIS HAS BEEN AN ORAL TRADITION IN THE HUMPHRYS FAMILY AS I READ IN THE HERITAGE BOOK FOR CHEROKEE COUNTY NC AS PRESENTED BY HUMPHRYS DESCENDENTS.  THE TREE I HAVE SEEN IS AS FOLLOWS... (THUS THERE IS NO INDICATION THE MCDANIELS WERE IN SOUTH CAROLINA THOUGH I ADMIT IT IS POSSIBLE THEY WERE THERE FOR A BRIEF PERIOD.)...
