Notes |
- Ann Diggs Graeme was born in 1700 in St. Albans, England. Her parents were Ann Newberry and Robert Diggs. After her father's death, her mother remarried to Sir William Keith, and Ann traveled to America with her mother and step-father who was to become the 14th governor of Pennsylvania, in 1717. She married Dr. Thomas Graeme on November 12, 1719 and went on to have nine to eleven children (accounts vary), the youngest of whom was the writer, Elizabeth Graeme Fergusson.
Ann was very pious, and after years of bad health welcomed and planned for her death. She instructed one of her older daughters, Ann Stedman not to mourn for her because "she was going to be happy" and her death was "what She most earnestly prayed for." She was giving up "everything in this Life for a Better."
As early as 1752 she'd planned her own funeral and woven her burial linen, on which she'd embroidered "The Lord hath mercifully guided me by his Council, and I humbly hope through the merits of my Dear Redeemer will Raise me up to Glory. This is the Hour the joyful Hour I have waited for and long very long wished for to be disolved and to be with Christ which is best of all."
