    • FORMER PUBLIC OFFICIAL DIES AUBREY ALBERDING, 86, HELD SEVERAL OFFICES, CREATED JOB PLAN FOR WELFARE RECIPIENTS.
Aubrey F. Alberding, a longtime Oneida County public official, died last week at 86.

The Oriskany Falls native served five terms on the former Oneida Board of Supervisors, which later became the county legislature, from 1955 to 1957 and 1959 to 1967. After stepping down from politics, he was Oneida County deputy commissioner of highways until 1978.

He was Augusta town supervisor from 1955 to 1972, and ran unsuccessfully for the 117th state Assembly District in 1968 and 1970. He chaired the town of Augusta Democratic committee from 1955 until 1990.

In the early 1960s, Alberding designed a home-relief work plan that allowed public assistance recipients the option of performing jobs for the county, such as painting buildings or mowing grass. Benefits were not withheld from anyone who could not or would not work, but the plan allowed people to see themselves as county employees instead of welfare recipients, said Alberding's son, Aubrey Alberding Jr.

"He thought it was good that they could give back. And back then, they were happy as hell to do it," Alberding Jr. said.
Former Oneida County director of purchasing Walter Keyser, who worked closely with Alberding in the 1970s, called his friend a fine leader who was interested in community work.

"You could believe what he said. He was honest to the people," Keyser said.

Alberding was a businessman before he went into public office, opening a grocery market in Utica in 1945 and later owning and operating stores in Oriskany Falls and Arizona.

Alberding Jr. said his father was a bold, assertive community leader.

"He stood up for anything," he said. "If he thought it was right, he backed it."

Alberding carried that spirit with him when he began treatment for lung cancer five months ago, his son said. In his short battle with the disease, he endured 34 radiation treatments and two chemotherapy sessions.

"He never gave up," Alberding Jr. said. "He was such a courageous man."

Alberding was buried Friday in Hillside cemetery in Oriskany Falls.

In addition to his son, he is survived by his wife of 65 years, Catherine; daughter Marcia Eddy of Haymarket, Va.; sister Evelyn Hayward of Camden, S.C., 10 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
