Notes |
- From Nathan:
About half way between the tavern and Father's shop was the house of Uncle Henry Burr, which he occupied as a residence and a shop for making chairs. he was fortunate in business and a happy man, but it was of short duration. At a moment when he least anticipated, his life was suddenly terminated. he went out to work, of an afternoon in 1815, on his timbered lot. In chopping down a tree it fell across a lodged tree in such a way as to swing the butt end in an unexpected manner against his head, dealing such a blow as brought him to the ground to rise no more. I was at work in one of our fields near where he was, heard the falling of trees, heard a single voice soon after giving the alarm. I hurried to the spot, little thinking what had occurred or that one so near to me had fallen. I was the second or third person who reached him. The blood was flowing from his ears and nose, and I at once beheld the sad reality and ran into the village, which was near, for a doctor. I speedily procured one, but it was to no purpose; he breathed his last a few minutes after my return. It was a crushing blow to Aunt Lovisa. His daughter Mary, an only child, was too young to be aware of the great loss she had sustained.
Nathan Thomas, half nephew of Lovisa Thomas Burr speaks of seeing the Stedman's when he visited Mt. Pleasant in 1846. He said they had four sons. Since Robert wasn't born until 28 Mar 1848 I wonder if Nathan has his date wrong or if William and Mary had another son who died.
