Notes |
- This is the John Stedman, the Sgt. Major John Stedman, who died defending Fort Griswold (Battle of Groton Heights) on September 6, 1781.
Sgt. Major John K. Stedman Jr. - Volunteer (had been a Sgt., New York Campaign 1776), Killed, Age ?, wife & 7 children.
(from DAR record #13001, Mrs. Flora D. Gates King)
John Stedman served in the company from Groton at the siege of Boston. He was sergeant-major in Capt. John William' company stationed at Ft. Griswold, 1779, and was killed 1781 when Arnold attacked the fort.
Evidence that John is a son of John Stedman, b. 1704, NL, is circumstantial. John Stedman and Experience Hutchison have a John Stedman, Jr. born in 1730 that is not otherwise followed. However, this John seems to be associated with Groton and that is where the marriage record is recorded.
_______________
William Wallace Harris & Charles Allyn, The Battle of Groton Heights, p. 249 (New London, 1882)
Sergeant John Stedman. Nothing is known of him save that he died in the fort. His friends suppose him to have been buried in the Old Ground, east of and near Gale's Ferry.
(elsewhere it mentions that he was from Groton.)
