  Notes	Eugene Russell Steedman was born at Steedman, his father's plantation home, in Lexington county, South Carolina. He attended neighborhood schools in that county. He probably went with his older brother to a parochial school and to Porter Military Academy in Charleston, SC. After his marriage, he settled on and farmed a portion of his father-in-law Dr. Kennerly's land which later became part of his real estate. About 1894, he and Mark Sidney Riley (d. 1901/1902), a first cousin by marriage, established a mercantile firm at Mount Willing Crossroads. This was a thriving business at that location until about 1897. The new town of Saluda was created in 1895 as the county seat, and business was drawn there. They moved the business about 1897 to Oak Street in Bateburg, SC, and operated there on a large scale. A list of progressive businessmen in that town included "Steadman and RIley - owners of two stores, general mechaindising and buggies." (Compilation of Batesburg-Leesburg Chamber of Commerce - Batesburg-Leesburg Area History, p. 5) Eugene's brother, Henry Spann Steadman, served as a bookkeeper for the firm at both loacations. In 1902, after the death of Mr. Riley, the firm ceased to operate. Eugene spent a period of time collecting and settling debts and his brother Henry moved to Bamburg, SC - his former place of residence. Leaving his family in Batesburg, Eugene subsequently went to the state of Washington ( a more favorable climate) for treatment and recuperation from an asthmatic condition. After spending two years there, he returned to Batesburg with much improved health and engaged in other affairs for the remainder of his business life. He and his family were active members of the Methodist Church in both Saluda County and Bateburg. On moving to Batesburg, he became a member of the Batesburg Masonic Lodge, No. 138, and was raised to Master Mason in 1898. He remained a member, holding different offices, until the time of his death. It is thought that he had been formerly a member of the Travis Masonic Lodge, near Mount Willing. Eugene died in his home in Batesburg and his wife Mittie died in Charlotte, NC, while visiting her niece, Mrs. Myra Elise (Steadman) Watson. Both of them are buried in Batesburg Cemetery.
