Notes |
- Steedman was one of the first to volunteer for service after the war began. He was a member of the Washington Light Infantry and served with that command until after the capture of Fort Sumter, April 13, 1864. He afterwards joined the Rutledge Mounted Rifleman and was with that corps which corps subsequently formed a part of the famous 7th regiment of South Carolina cavalry on the coast of Carolina, in Virginia, North Carolina and until the sad surrender at Greensboro. That company bore the brunt of many a battle, and illustrated by bold bearing, unchilled devotion and intrepidity the patriotic ardor and sublime heroism of Carolinians. Major Steedman was one of the most dashing and daring of cavalrymen; he was popular with his comrades and enjoyed the confidence of the officers. He was promoted to the office of sergeant. After the close of the war associated himself with Mr. R. G. Wilkins in the cotton business. He had been a faithful and fearless soldier throughout the struggle for Southern Independence, and he remained true to the principles for which the South so grandly struggled. He was an active and a useful officer of Camp Sumter, United Confederate Veterans, and was an aide to the major general commanding the South Carolina division.
