      Services were held Wednesday, July 6, at the Prescott United Church for Garnett Cornell Baker, 87, of Corning. He died July 4, 1988, at Colonial Manor in Corning.

      The Rev. Jeanne Groom officiated. Burial was in the Mount Zion Cemetery in Prescott. Memorials may be directed to the Prescott United Church.

      Survivors include his wife, Bertha; three daughters, Phyllis Steadman and husband, Byron of Corning, Norma Schlegel of Omaha, Neb., and Bonnie Crill and husband, Dell of Glenwood; sister Maude Brockett of Holdrege, Neb.

    • Garnett C. Baker
      Final rites for Garnett C. Baker, 89, of Corning, were held July 6 at the Prescott United Church. The Rev. Jeanne Groom officiated.

      Casket bearers were Tade Knapp, Reldon Cline, Blake Cooper, Paul Mitchell, Ralph Talman and Wilbur Rasmussen. FLower bearers were Marie Knapp and Bonnie Tallman. Burial was in the Mt. Zion Cemetery in Prescott.

      Mr. Baker was the son of Samuel L. and Paulena Stalb Baker and was born April 15, 1901, near Atlanta, Neb. He died July 4, 1988, at Colonial Manor in Corning.

      He attended school in Atlanta and Holdrege, Neb. He worked in the Atlanta Drug Store and on farms nearby. Mr. Baker came to Iowa in the fall of 1922 to pick corn and remained in Iowa, later working for Joe Hayes and on the Mart Miller farm.

      He married Bertha Crouse Sept. 16, 1925, in Corning. They spent the first year of their marriage in Atlanta, Neb., then returned to Iowa where they lived on a farm north of Prescott for 52 years. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1975 with their family present. THey moved to Corning in 1979.

      Mr. Baker was a member of the Prescott United Church. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, three sisters and a son-in-law, Eman Schlegel.

      Survivors are his wife; three daughters, Phyllis Steadman and husband Byron  of Corning, Norma Schlegel of Omaha, Neb., and Bonnie Crill and husband Dell of Glenwood; sister, Maude Brockett of Holdrege, Neb.; 10 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren.
