    Notes
    • January 17, 1887 Obituary:

Wm. C. Steadman Joins the Great Majority, -- His Life Example -- A Community  Mourns his Loss.

"William Champlin Steadman was born in Rhode Island on Sept. 20, 1799, in which state he resided until he became of age.  He then came to Jamestown, NY, where he lived some nine years.  He was married there to Marena Crane, sister of Lyman Crane, deceased, of that place, and the result of this union was two children, both of whom are dead.  In a few years, after living happily together, Mrs. Steadman died.  He then moved to Columbus, Warren Co., PA and was married to Clarrisa Mount and to them ten children were born, all but two of them are now [1887] dead, Rev. D. S. Steadman of the M. E. Church at Tidioute and Mrs. Celestia Shaffer, of Newburg, NY.  However, most of this large family of children lived to man and womanhood before they died.

"After living at Columbus about five years, he moved into Wayne Township, Crawford County, where he lived until about 1860, when he moved to this city.  At the outbreak of the Oil excitement he went to Petroleum Center, where he was very successful as a producer, and acquired quite a snug fortune, at one time being owner of a handsome flowing well on what was known as the Watson Flats.  Returning to this place later on he engaged in the oil refining business, in which he lost considerable of the money he had made in the oil country.

"His second wife having died while yet a resident of Wayne, soon after moving here he was again married, this time to Cynthia Smith, mother of H. G., G. Gary, and Garrett G, Smith, who now survives him.

"While living at Columbus he was twice quite seriously injured by the carelessness of drunken men with whom he was working, and the last time he was injured, he solemnly vowed never to work where men had been drinking, not even would he attend loggings, or barn raisings, then so common, where any liquor was had or used, and he kept his vow ever after.  He became a member of the Methodist church 74 years ago, since which time he has ever held some official position in the church.  He has been an exhorter and local preacher for the past 50 years, and in 1871 was ordained as deacon in the Erie Conference of that church.

"During all these years he has lived an exemplary Christian life in every respect.  He was an excellent citizen, one ever willing and ready to work for the advancement of the community he was in, and accommodating, pleasant neighbor, and when the news came last Thursday morning that Wm C. Steadman was dead there was but one sentiment expressed by all our people, and that was, an honest man, whose life had been active and full of good deeds, had gone to a just reward.

"He had also filled many places of trust.  For eleven consecutive years he was a tax collector for the borough, a position he filled very acceptably.  He retained his mental faculties remarkably for a man of his years, until within a few days of his death when his mind seemingly entirely lost.  When 80 years old he served as traverse juror in Erie and was as clear in mind as any of the other jurors drawn for that term.

"Of his own family he leaves two half brothers who reside in Corry, an own brother Earl F. Steadman, who now resides in Wayne [twp.],  a son and daughter above mentioned, a sister, Mrs. Miranda Windsor, of Corry, who was with him in his last illness and rendered such care as only a loving sister could to make his last hours on earth as comfortable as possible, and his aged companion, who although quite feeble, rendered every loving act possible to alleviate his sufferings, and who now deeply mourns his loss.

"Free, noble hearted, honest Uncle Steadman has passed over the dark river, and while he will be greatly missed in his home circle, and his chair in the church shall be vacant, and his form no longer seen upon our streets, yet his memory will live and be cherished by his relatives, friends and neighbors, each feeling that by his presence and by the Christian example he ever set, the world has been made better by his having lived in it.  His remains were taken to Columbus last Saturday morning for interment in the [Curtis] cemetery there where his mother, wife and most of his children were buried.  Peace to his ashes."

    • James Hull Stedman and Elizabeth Champlin was married abiut 1797, probably in South Kingstown, RI.  They seem to have moved to New York before 1807.  Although some sources say they were in Tioga County, they are probably shown in the 1810 census for Oneida County, New York.

James and Elizabeth seem to have gotten divorced in Oneida County, sometime between 1815 and 1818, when James married for a second time.  It is not known if Elizabeth remarried.
