Subject: Some more STEDMAN info
James was dead by the 1851 census, having died 28th August 1841 age 46 (good man for having lasted for the 1841 census!!) He died of 'Disease of the Brain' which I have looked into (well, not his brain...) and found out it was probably malaria. This was rife on the river Thames at the time apparently and deaths from it were often described as disease of the brain. A 'R James' was present at the death although I have not managed to connect this person.
I believe there may be a connection with the EDGCOMBE family. Helen, who was born 'at sea' Plymouth 1839 and her middle name was EDGCUMBE. I have tried at length to find James and Mary Catherine's marriage but still no luck - have been looking for about ten years now. It is very likely the marriage was around the Portsmouth area as he was on prison ships there around the time.
The male STEDMANs all seem to have been involved in prison hulks from the late 18th century. I have a family tree for the STEDMANs going back to Thomas, b.c.1650 in Ardingly, Sussex.
