Notes |
- OLIVER RICHARDSON
Born, Medway, Sept. 10, 1754. Died, Medway, July 4, 1845.
Father, Moses. Mother, Abigail Allen.
Married, first, Vashti Ramsdell, of Medway; second, Mrs. Mary Steadman (Carroll), nee Fairbanks.
CHILDREN: 1st, Priscilla, Oliver, Charles, Abigail; 2d, Putnam.
OLIVER RICHARDSON, the fifteenth name on the charter, was a blacksmith, or, perhaps, would now more properly be called a machinist, and also a brick mason. That he was of an ingenious turn of mind we have evidence in a patent which was granted to him for an improvement in flues for the old-fashioned fireplaces of the day. This patent, signed by President Madison, is still kept in the family.
Late in life he married, second, Mrs. Mary Steadman (Carroll), nee Fairbanks, and from this union there was born one son, Putnam, who was adopted by Putnam Clark, of Medway, and took the name of Putnam Richardson Clark. Putnam Richardson Clark was born in 1831 and is still living in Millis, and he is the only son of any of our charter members alive in this centennial year, and with Mrs. Jonathan Pond, of Medway, a daughter of David Wiswell, another charter member, shares the honor of being the only children of any of the charter members now living. These cases are so unusual as to merit special mention, representing as they do only two generations since I754 and I765, the birth dates of their fathers.
Our charter member was a Revolutionary soldier, being credited with service on the 19th of April, I775, in Capt. John Boyd's company. His record is for eight months' service in 1775 in Capt. John Boyd's company, of Colonel Greaton's regiment; Sergeant in Captain Fairbanks's company, in 1777; in Capt. Amos Ellis's company in 1778, and in Capt. John Ellis's company, of Major Seth Bullard's regiment, in 1780.
While he does not appear to have held public office, he came of worthy ancestry, as his father was Representative from his town for thirteen years, besides holding other offices of honor and trust.
Oliver, our charter member, evidently retained his interest in the Lodge, for we find him Senior Deacon in 1811.
