LANDRUM FIRE CHIEF, 63, HAS HELD MANY OFFICES
CRAWFORD M. STEADMAN Saw His First Train at Station There

" When I was six years of age, my grandmother, my two oldest sisters and myself came to Landrum to witness the first railroad train to come to that town and it frightened me so that my grandmother had to hold me to keep me from running away".

Thus CRAWFORD MITCHELL STEADMAN, former member of the council of Landrum, former magistrate, chief of police and now chief of the fire dept. there , begins his account of the early history of the town of Landrum.

" Chief STEADMAN", as he will always be known , regardless of the office he may hold , recalls the first lots that were sold in Landrum, and explains that the first houses were not really ' houses' in the sense they are used now- they were two log cabins.

" There was a sale", said Chief STEADMAN, " and the first lots of the town were sold and two log cabins were built thereon. There was at that time a grocery store owned by a MR. MONTGOMERY , and the first settlers, as I remember, were two GURLEY families that lived in these small log cabins." Also recalled that "the blockaders killed a revenue officer named JIM LEDFORD near the depot the day the train came into Landrum for the first time".

He also saw the next two houses that were built in Landrum, being constructed by the REV. J.G. LANDRUM and one of these homes is now located to the rear of the postoffice and is occupied by MRS. HENDERSON. The other home is located to the rear of the Landrum Bakery and is occupied by KELLY WRIGHT." At the time of which Chief Steadman recalls, "Landrum was nothing but forest land, and where now stands the Mutual Bank was a saw mill".

At the present time Landrum has nearly 400 buildings and a population of several thousand. "Fifty-three years ago I walked to school, a distance of four miles, to Oak Grove Church in Greenville County with my teacher, ZACK WHITESIDE. MRS. A.R. WALDEN'S father. I went to school in the class of MRS. CARRIE LANDRUM, who was known to all as 'AUNT CARRIE'. She was the mother of the late B.G. LANDRUM. We were buddies from childhood. We attended school together and as young men we went together. We fox- hunted and squirrel-hunted all over the Blue Ridge Mountains.

In 1905 Chief Steadman was employed by the late W.H. LYLES, Columbia attorney, to oversee a little farm in Landrum.

" I worked for him 17 years and found him to be one of the finest gentlemen in South Carolina", stated the Chief.

He served as police chief until the summer of 1915 and resigned to again become a magistrate and J.M. WOLFE was elected chief of police in his place.

He was born and reared near the city limits of Landrum, " am bald-headed and will be 64 years old on the sixth day of November.

" Some of these times before I get to be an old man, I may decide to run for some office other than police or fire chief or magistrate", he stated.

The Landrum chief is well know in Spartanburg, especially by members of Sheriff SAM M. HENRY'S force and the rural police, having assisted them on several occasions.
