    • FRANKLIN HOBBS, A TEXTILE LEADER
New England Manufacturer Dies at 86 -- Headed U.S. Wool, Cotton Groups
Special to The New York Times

BOSTON, June 16 -- Franklin Warren Hobbs, for many years a leader in the New England textile industry, died tonight at his home here. He was 86 years old.

Mr. Hobbs was associated for more that sixty years with the Arlington Mills, later known as the William Whitman Company. He was an exective officer for fifty-seven years, retiring as board chairman in 1952.

He is believed to have been the only manufacturer to head both the National Cotton and National Wool Manufacturers Associations. He had served since 1930 as board chairman of the Textile Foundation, Washington.

Mr. Hobbs was a great-grandson of Abraham Marland, who pioneered wool manufacture in this country by setting up a mill at Andover, Mass.

The former was graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1889 and taught mechanical engineering there until getting a job with Arlington Mills in 1891.

He studied the British textile industry and became assistant treasurer of Arlington Mills in 1895. In 1902 he became treasurer and in 1913 president. He was made board chairman in 1946.

In the latter year Arlington Mills acquired William Whitman Company.

From 1910 to 1912, Mr. Hobbs served as president of the National Association of Wool Manufacturers. He headed the National Association of Cotton Manufacturers in the late Twenties.

Mr. Hobbs held honorary degrees from Dartmouth and Middlebury Colleges and the University of North Carolina.

He leaves a son, Marland Cogswell Hobbs of Chestnut Hill, Mass., and a daughter.
