- Girl Drowns Beneath Car After Crash
Victim Pinned Under Machine Following Skid and Wreck
Preston -- Pinned beneath the automobile in a small stream after the car had skidded from the highway and overturned, Sylvia Stedman, 16, of Preston, was drowned Christmas eve at about 11:15 p. m. The accident occurred two and a half miles south of Preston, near the point where the highway crosses the railroad track.
Other occupants of the car, Roland Chatterton, Lillis Gillespie and Alice Stedman, an older sister of the accident victim, were uninjured.
Sheriff W. D. Head, who investigated, said the accident occurred when the driver of the car applied the brakes and threw the car into a skid. The car swung halfway round and overturned in the stream alongside the road. Gillespie was the driver of the car.
Neighbors, alarmed by the crash, rushed to the scene of the accident and tried to remove the car. They were unable to extricate the girl, however, until after she had been submerged for almost an hour.
Efforts to revive her through artificial respiration were unavailing.
Miss Stedman was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Stedman of this city, who reside at the McQueen apartment. The Stedman family formerly lived in Salt Lake City.
Miss Stedman, in addition to her parents, is survived by two brothers and three sisters.
The body was taken to the Hendricks mortuary to await funeral arrangements.
