Mrs. Lebbens (sic) Graves (Lucena Graham) was a practical, energetic woman, and transmitted those characteristics to her daughters. She came in 1834 bringing a part of her numerous family and her husband's mother with her. Her grandmother taught her to knit when quite young. For needles she had wire cut the required length. The grandmother insisted upon a certain amount of work each day, and it must be done well or raveled out. One day, wishing to play, Lucena hid her needles in the ash heap, and reported that she could not find them. "Grandmother" was equal to the occasion. She took wire from an old broom and had more needles cut. She then doubled the task, and compelled her granddaughter to stick to it until done. In after life Mrs. Graves said: "I thought my grandmother was rough on me then, but how thankful I am now that I was trained to habits of industry and perseverance."
Mrs. Lunnan Tubbs (Sophia Graves), who came in 1836, was a daughter of Mrs. Lucena (Graham) Graves, and possessed all the energy of her mother. She taught the district school, and gathered the first Sabbath school in the new frame school house. She distributed temperance tracts for reading matter to the scholars, going all the way to Elyria, twenty miles, to buy them, and paid for them with her own money. She afterwards married the Rev. Abel A. Wood, a local Methodist minister, and is still living, the second time a widow, at her old home in Spencer.
Mrs. Daniel Booth (Lucinda M.) another daughter of Mrs. Graves, was married in New York. Her husband having left her for the second time, she came with her parents to Ohio. He soon followed, and desiring to live with his wife, her father gave her a hundred acres of land, and she endeavored to build up a happy home. Her husband took offense, because the deed was not given to him, and after privately selling all the loose property he could, took his final leave. She was left alone for the third time without money or means of support, and with two small children, one a baby only two months old. By spinning and knitting she provided necessities for herself and little ones.
In 1840, she married Reuben Falconer, and for over fifty years proved a helpmeet to him. The Bible, her constant companion, was read through by course over twenty-five times. Mid-winter snow, or summer storms, night or day, she willingly went forth to attend the sick, the dying, or drape the dead, but the willing heart and hands are now at rest.
