"James's origin has not yet been proved, but I have some information that he came from Speldhurst near Tunbridge Wells. In his Will he referred to two of his sisters, Mary Mulcock and Susannah Blake, both widows in 1828 when James wrote his Will and the year in which he died.

James was a 'Chymist and Druggist' of High St, W Malling, Kent. He married Elizabeth Martin of nearby Plaxtol, the daughter of Francis Martin, on 21st Jan 1788 in W Malling. It has been suggested that Elizabeth Martin came from W Malling, the daughter of one Edward Martin. Although there was such an Elizabeth Martin of a similar age, ours was the one from Plaxtol. Her marriage in W Malling was witnessed by her father, Francis Martin who later, in his Will, forgives James Stedman, Chemist of W Malling, 'sums owed'. In the 1851 census Elizabeth Stedman gave her place of birth as Plaxtol so there is no doubt that she is the daughter of Francis Martin of Plaxtol.

The Chemists was taken over by the youngest son, William. Although William had 4 sons, he died before they were old enough to take the business on, so it passed to one of James's grandsons, Richard Broomfield Stedman. He ran the business until some time after 1891 when he described it as 'pharmaceutical chemist, bookseller and stationer and circulating library'. (An odd mixture but for those readers old enough, remember Boots the Chemists!). He passed the business to his youngest son Arthur who was running it in 1901. It does not seem to exist today, but I have recently met someone who was born in W Malling c 1950 and who remembers the Stedman Chemist shop."

Dr. James Stedman MD was born 11 Nov 1788 in West Malling, Kent, England to James Stedman  (1763 - 1828)  and Elizabeth Martin  (b. about 1767), daughter of Edward Martin and Elizabeth Marshall. He married Sarah Remington  (1791 - 21 Dec 1862 Guildford, Surrey, England), daughter of Dr. Thomas Remington  (about 1760 - 14 Aug 1832) and Lady Ann Turnour (born about 1758 - died 29 Oct 1824) the sister of Lord Winterton, 10 Dec 1816 in St. Mary's Church, Guildford, Surrey, England.

James and Sarah's children were: Dr. James Remington Stedman (Aug 1817 - 6 Dec 1891); Anne Stedman (b. 1 Jan 1819); Harriet Stedman (b.3 Feb 1820); Charles Stedman (16 May 1821 - 4 Mar 1822); Elizabeth Stedman (14 Jul 1822 - 20 Feb 1823); Eliza Stedman (1824 - 23 Apr 1916); Henry Stedman (30 May 1826 - 18 May 1827); Rev. Willam Newland Stedman (b. 1828).

Dr. James Stedman practiced medicine in Guildford most of his life and died in his home, Bishop's Croft, and is buried in Guildford.

He was thrice Mayor of Guildford.

Their daughter, Eliza Stedman married Rev. Francis Owston MA (13 Aug 1819 - 16 Apr 1908), son of Richard Owston and Sarah Merry, 16 Apr 1850 in Guildford, Surrey, England. Their children were Capt Francis Owston (27 Apr 1852 - 27 Jan 1927); Alan Owston (7 Aug 1853 - 30 Nov 1915); and Bertha Owston (24 Jun 1864 - 1952).

Hervey, N.B. 1987 suggests that this was the house David Irish advertised in 1700. In 1773 Thomas Irish was "of Great Foster House".

1774 licensed to Mary Street and Mary Jellyman, who Nic Hervey says were spinsters. He also mentions a John Randall as licensee. "In 1774 it contained nine female private patients, and from then until 1793 when it closed down temporarily the numbers gradually decreased to 3."

1798 Re-opened under the ownership of James Stilwell, taking both male and female private patients, with numbers fluctuating between 2 to 6.

1815 list: Guildford: Stilwell

James Stilwell christened 24.2.1771 at Compton Near Guildford, was the son of James and Elizabeth Stilwell. James Stillwell married Ann Chuter on 13.10.1796 at Stoke Next Guildford. James Stilwell christened 27.4.1798 at Stoke Next Guildford, was the son of James and Ann Silwell. Arthur Stilwell, born 16.12.1813, christened 16.2.1814 Stoke Next Guildford. Parents: James and Ann Stilwell. A James Stilwell married Ann Foreman on 11.2.1812 at Willingdon in Sussex. A James Stilwell married Ann Foreman on 5.10.1828 at Stoke Next Guildford
Possibly 1817 or 1828 that James Stilwell moved to Moor Croft, Hillingdon?

"In 1817 the license passed to a Thomas Jenner Sells who was in practice with Caleb Woodyer and James Stedman in Guildford, and these gentlemen together with Randall remained connected with asylum until the 1850s. It was James Stedman who was generally the licensee however."

By 1826 "the numbers had gone up to nine, but in the 1840s there were generally only 4 or 5 inmates and the proprietors were taking more male than female patients, a trend which continued in the 1860s".

Alt. Death:
Nick Stedman has this date. FreeBMD lists two deaths of James Stedmans in the Guildford District between 1851 and 1861; A December 1852 death, Vol. 2a, p. 36, and a March 1861 death, Vol. 2a, p. 39.

I believe the 1861 date is correct because there is a burial that seems to fit in Guildford in 1861.

"Robert married Theodosia Mary Savignac. The Savignac family were originally Huguenots from Niort coming to England in 1701 as a result of the Revocation of the Edict of Nantes. They settled in St Olaves, Southwark and were 'oyle leather dressers'. Whether due to their trade or some other factor, the Savignac name died out as they seemed to die fairly young and often childless. One of the last ones was Emma Savignac who was witness to Robert's marriage on 1st Aug 1826 in Carshalton. Emma died in 1841. I am not sure who she was as she does not feature in the Savignac family tree.

Theodosia's father, James Savignac (who 'led a wandering life') died in 1847. For some reason, the Stedman family seems to have made a special effort to preserve the name by using it as a first or middle name and for females as well as males. There is an active branch of the Savignac family in the USA with records kept by one David Savignac of Crofton, Maryland.

Robert gave his parish as Littleham, Exmouth in his marriage record implying that that was where he lived. His first son, Robert Savignac, was born in 1827 in Exeter, but by the time his second, Frederick, was born in 1829 he had already moved to Sevenoaks.

What took Robert to Devon? Presumably something to do with his medical career and possibly to do with Exeter as that has one of the oldest medical schools in the country.

In Sevenoaks, Robert Stedman is listed in Pigot's Directory in 1840 as a Surgeon and medical referee to the General Annuity Endowment Association. At some point he moved to Gt Bookham, Surrey. This could have been as early as 1840 as the Stedman family does not feature in the 1841 census for Sevenoaks. It does, however, feature in the 1851 census for Gt Bookham. Robert and Theodosia both died in Gt Bookham, but I have not found their headstones in St Nicholas, the parish church. However, the headstone of Mary Savignac, Theodosia's mother, is there.

One presumes Robert moved to Sevenoaks to practise because of family connections in the locality, but what took Robert to the Leatherhead district? One answer could be that his elder brother James was a successful surgeon in Guildford. Also Sevenoaks was not a wealthy place in those days but the Guildford-Leatherhead stretch of country was very fashionable with back-to-back mini country estates of London businessmen - a good place to establish a practice. In the 1851 Gt Bookham census, however, he described himself as Surgeon, London Royal Hospital. On the other hand it could have something to do with the education of their 4 boys who ranged in age in 1840 from 6 to 13."

Residence:
According to Nick Stedman, by 1829 he had moved to Sevenoaks, Kent where he practised as a surgeon and was Medical Referee to the General Annuity Endowment Association.  By 1841 he had moved to Gt Bookham, Surrey.

Richard Broomfield married Ellen Fremlin and had 4 sons and 2 daughters. I am in touch with the g grandson of the eldest son, William Richard. Richard (senior) and Sarah's 5 other children (3 sons and 2 daughters) were all born in Billericay, Essex. One of the sons (William) ran a Chemists in Ashford, Kent, which in turn was taken over by one of his sons, Frank. Richard and Sarah at some point between 1839 and 1844 moved to Aylesbury where they ran the Chemists in Market Sq. By 1854 this Chemists was being run by their youngest son, Charles."

"Silas got his name from his uncle on the Martin side of the family (Elizabeth's eldest brother). He married Charlotte Stilwell of Eltham, Kent. They had 7 daughters and 2 sons all born in Eltham. Silas was reportedly a Chemist and Surgeon. His eldest son Silas Stilwell, married Harriet Stedman (his cousin) and became a Surgeon in Arundel, Sussex. Their eldest son, Silas James, matriculated from Queens College, Oxford in 1865 and became a doctor. He then disappears from the records. There is an odd record in The New Zealander of a daughter born to a Silas Stedman MD in 1860 in Auckland but the dates mismatch. There is no trace of James William, the second son of Silas and Charlotte."

"William the youngest son, was a Chemist and inherited the Chemists business. He married Sarah Anne Whiting from Addington, Kent and had 4 sons and 2 daughters. He appeared to die fairly suddenly in 1850 as his youngest son, Alfred was christened on 17th Feb 1850, but by the time William's mother, Elizabeth, writes her Will on 15th Oct 1850 he is referred to as 'my late son, William'. In the 1851 census, the Chemists was already being run by Richard Broomfield Stedman. In the 1871 census, Sarah Anne was still living in High, W Malling with daughters Ellen and Jane, and with Alfred (21), a Draper. The eldest two sons, William and James can't be traced. The third son, George, became a Brewery Manager in Milton-in-Gravesend and had 2 sons and 1 daughter. Alfred married, had 2 sons and 3 daughters. He moved to Hambledon, Hampshire but eventually became a Restaurateur in the Channel Islands."

"Robert Savignac became a surgeon and married one Fanny Dulley, the daughter of Benjamin Dulley, a Consulting Surgeon in Wellingborough. Presumably, it was the medical connection that took Robert to Northamptonshire. Robert settled in nearby Sharnbrook, Bedfordshire, and had 2 daughters and 1 son. Sadly, his wife died in (or as a result of) childbirth. Even more sad is that Robert himself died less than 2 years later (intestate) leaving all three children orphaned. Arthur Stedman became the legal guardian of the children who were a similar age to his own children. Fanny, Maude, and Francis grew up in Gt Bookham and were therefore virtually brothers and sisters to FOS."

"Arthur Stedman married Sarah Carter of Marlborough. Sarah's father William was from Cricklade and described himself as a Herald Painter (ie a designer of Coats of Arms). Presumably there was not much work in this line around Wiltshire as he became the landlord of The Ailesbury Arms in Marlborough, a substantial coaching inn by the Town Hall. Sarah was one of 14 children, 8 girls and 6 boys. One of the boys, James, took over the innkeepers job and became Mayor of Marlborough in 1891/2. One of his sons, Herbert, graduated from Jesus, Cambridge, was Assistant Master of Sydney Grammar School and President of the Linnean Society NSW. He wrote a number of books and discovered a number of new species. Sarah was a religious person and belonged to the Plymouth Brethren. She worked in the Poor House in Marlborough looking after orphaned children. At the age of 25 Arthur married Sarah aged 33 in 1859.

How did Arthur meet Sarah as there seems to be no previous connection with Marlborough? Arthur can barely have finished his training when he married. After marrying, they lived for a short while in Cookham. There seemed to be a preponderance of Carters in Cookham, and maybe Arthur was there before he married so perhaps he had met a relation?

They had 5 boys and 1 girl. The first boy died in infancy or at birth. He was born at Cookham. The next two, Theodosia and FOS, were born in Cullompton, Devon (Devon again?) although FOS, who was born on the last day of 1862, was christened on 27th Mar 1863 in Gt Bookham. As Robert Stedman (senior) had only just died, it is likely that Arthur was already in the process of taking over the practice in Bookham.

Stories have been passed down about the strict upbringing of the Stedman children due to Sarah's strongly held religious beliefs. However, the evidence from coroner's reports in connection with the Poor House in Marlborough and the way she writes her Will seem to point to a very sincere but gentle person. Arthur, though, appears to be the pedant as his Will is dry and very prescriptive. All the children except Eustace had (or were pushed into) medical interests. Theodosia (Vigny) became a nurse, FOS and Savignac Bell became doctors, and Ernest Alan died at 19 whilst a medical student.

After Arthur died in 1894, Sarah and Eustace moved to Wallington near Carshalton where Sarah died in 1905. In her Will written in 1900 she remembered all her children Vigny, Osmund, Eustace and Savignac, and also Robert (Francis Robert) and her grandchildren Harold and Alan Mowll. She wishes them present at her funeral and their travelling expenses to be paid from her estate except for Osmund who 'needs nothing in this way'. She wished to be buried near where she lived."

Dear John,
I was recently googling my grandfather Silas Stedman when I came across your letter - I'm not sure if you have resolved your question, yet but I thought I should email you to let you know that Silas Stilwell Stedman was my great-great grandfather (I think that's the right number of greats!) and Harriet Stedman obviously my great-great grandmother. They both came out to New Zealand in 1860 and Silas Stilwell Stedman was the first surgeon at Christchurch Hospital by 1862. I am unfortunately temporarily living overseas at the moment so I don't have the facts close to hand, but I am pretty sure they both died of a fever while he was attending patients in the countryside, and we have a lot more information on them at home. I don't know if we have any information on Harriet's parentage, but when I am home (in December) I could look up the deaths records at the public library in Christchurch, as I have seen both hers and Silas' there, I think. I could also email my father or uncles to ask any questions, if you want to ask any. I would be very pleased to pass on more information about the New Zealand wing of the Stedman family, as it has been very exciting to find yours and others' information on the internet.

Apptd 1st physician supt Christchurch Hosp 15 May 1862. Regd May 1864 to practise as an eye specialist. Died in Christchurch Hosp from typhoid fever 4 Dec 1865 aged 44. Great-grandfather of Dr Shailer Weston (regd 1943).

"Fanny Theodosia Savignac married (eventually) Claude Du Pre Thornton who worked in the Indian Civil Service. Fanny lived with her Uncle Frederick until he died in March 1909. She married in Sept 1909 at the age of 44 and is likely to have met her husband through Frederick's Indian connections. There were no children. She probably spent time in India but when her husband retired, they lived in St James Sq, London. In her Will, she made a number of specific bequests to people working in the Indian Police, Agricultural Dept. and Railway Company. When her husband died she lived with her brother, Francis Robert, in Oxshott until her death in 1939."

"Theodosia Mary Savignac (Aunt Vigny) reportedly eloped with her fiancée Charles Havelock Mowll of Dover due to her stern upbringing in the Bookham household. Although she was a few weeks under 21 when she married in April 1882, she was married in St Nicholas, Bookham with her father as principal witness. Hardly elopement!

They lived in Dover and had 2 sons, Harold Havelock Savignac and Alan William Rutley. Charles died quite young at 35 in 1892. In 1900, at the age of 39, Vigny remarried one Garforth Drury, a solicitor, of Newcastle upon Tyne (aged 29) and moved up there with her 2 sons.

One wonders how she met Garforth? A possible link is that Garforth's father, Charles Hill Drury from Newcastle, was a surgeon and for a while, around 1881, practised in Camberwell, Surrey. By 1891 he was in Durham with the 19 year old Garforth. Another possibility is that Garforth knew the Mowlls in his early days as a solicitor in Newcastle. The Mowlls were coal merchants in Dover and had coastal shipping interests probably shipping coal down from Tyneside.

Harold Mowll, the eldest son, became a marine engineer and married Elsie Heath. They had 1 son, Garforth Savignac, born in 1911. As of writing Garforth Mowll is alive and living in Florida. I have spoken to him on the phone and am in touch with his daughter Carolyn Keebler.

Alan Mowll married but had no children.

Sadly, their father, Harold, lost his life at the end of the First World War in 1918. He was a Lieutenant in the RNVR. His memorial stone is at Guildford (Stoke) Old Cemetery (E303).

There are a few photos of Aunt Vigny as it seems that Nigel Stedman was sent up to stay with the Drurys from time to time during holidays in his Prep School years. She looks a kindly soul and one assumes takes after her mother."

"Frederick Osmund Robert was born in Cullompton, Devon but christened in Bookham. He attended Epsom Downs Royal Medical Benevolent College and gained a scholarship to Charing Cross Hospital in 1881. He gained his MRCS in 1885. At some point he moved to Sevenoaks to practise and he is listed in the 1891 Pigot's Directory as Dr Osmund Stedman, 34 High St, Sevenoaks.

He is believed to have first gone to Hong Kong in 1893/4 as an army doctor.

He married Lilian Le Mesurier in Hong Kong on 15th May 1899. During WW1 he returned to Europe to supervise the Chinese who were brought over to dig the trenches. He helped to found two hospitals: Matilda on The Mount in Hong Kong and Weybridge Hospital in Surrey."

"Eustace Arthur also attended Epsom Downs Royal Medical Benevolent College. He did not make the grade or was not interested in medicine. He had an artistic flair (Carter genes?). According to Nigel Stedman he was 'forced' to become a bank clerk and work at a menial task in a bank. However, his father died when he was 28, and he continued to work in the bank until he retired, so presumably he cannot have hated it that much! He lived at home until his father died and then lived in Wallington with his mother, Sarah, until she died in 1905. He seemed to get around and painted a number of pictures in places like Surrey, N Tyne and Hong Kong. He worked in Lloyds Bank, Brondesbury (N London) and when he retired married his landlady Phoebe Pinches. They moved to Tisbury, Wiltshire and lived in The Old House. He died on 22nd June 1942. He left a substantial amount in his Will to the survivor of his niece Mrs Doris Grace Savignac Montgomerie (Savignac Bell's daughter) or her son Arthur Hugh Savignac Montgomerie."

"Savignac Bell seemed to have been called by both his names (Uncle Bell and Savignac by his mother). He qualified as a physician and surgeon sometime in the early 1890s.

He married Jane Grace Wheway in Mile End on 8th May 1900. The marriage was witnessed by Joseph Arthur, her uncle and Francis Robert Stedman. Jane Grace was orphaned at the age of 6. The Wheways were from Nuneaton where her father, George, was an organist and professional musician and her mother, Grace, was a schoolteacher.

By 1900 Savignac was already in practice in Binbrook, Lincolnshire. Savignac and Grace lived in Binbrook and the parish archives of Binbrook record that Savignac left in 1909. They had two daughters, Doris Grace Savignac and Joan. I have not yet tracked down Joan but she does not feature in any of the later Wills of the family so I assume she must have died.

At some point Savignac emigrated to Ceylon where he died in 1935 and is buried in Colombo. He became a tea planter in Ceylon and Gren Le Mesurier (Lilian's nephew) went out there and was apprenticed to him. It is not known if Savignac practised medicine in Ceylon or what took him there in the first place.

There is possibly a photo of Doris in the collection. She is remembered in FOS's Will as well as Eustace's Will. She took over the house in Tisbury and died on the 18th Nov 1980 in Christchurch, Dorset. She had one son, Arthur Hugh Savignac Montgomerie, who lived in the Watford area. He died on 10th Aug 1986 in Radlett and was survived by his wife, Beryl Elaine. It is not known if they had any children but none are mentioned in his Will.
A small puzzle surrounds the memorial stones in St Nicholas, Bookham. There are two stones (photos below) on which are recorded Arthur, Sarah and all their children, birth and death dates. Who created them? It was not Nigel Stedman or Noel Stedman. They were completed some time after 1942 since Eustace's death is recorded. My best guess is Francis Robert Stedman who lived nearby in Oxshott, died some 10 years after Eustace and would have known everyone recorded on the memorial stones."
