Benjamin Hammond was one of the most prominent men of the locality in his day, both in civil and military life. He was Selectman from 1767 to 1776, and held many of the town offices after the close of the war. His assessment was one of the largest in Newton. After the death of his wife he went to Rutland to live with his daughter, Mrs. Read.

Benjamin Hammond's military experience extended over a period of many years. The earliest record that has been found, is that of a Newton Co. of Militia, Dec. 29, 1763, "Col. Wm. Brattle; Capt. James Stone; Lieut. Benjaman Hammond; Ensign, John Kenrick."

A pay roll of the field and staff officers of Col. Thomas Gardner's Regt. of militia that marched in consequence of the alarm on the 19th of April, 1775:

He was Lieut. Col. in Col. Wm. McIntosh's Regt. at Roxbury and Boston in April, 1778. (Mass. Muster Rolls, Book 26, p. 194.)

He was Lieut. Col. in Col. Samuel Thatcher's Regt., at Dorchester Heights, in 1776; 1st, Middlesex County Regt. sent to re-inforce Gen. Heath. (Mass. Soldiers and Sailors in Rev.)

At the time of the breaking out of the Revolution he was Captain of the Newton Company. He had trained his men to handle a cannon. They were to assemble at the Centre if the cannon was fired. On the alarm of April 19, 1775, Capt. Benjamin was working in his field when the alarm was given. Before the men had all assembled, Sergt. Jackson started with a part of the Company. Capt. Benjamin, armed with as word, holsters and a small flint lock gun, overtook the Company and assumed command, skirmishing on the way to Lexington.

Col. Benjamin Hammond was an active Revolutionist, from the commencement of the troubles with the Mother Country.

In March, 1773, he was appointed on a committee, town of Newton, "to confer with the inhabitants about leaving off buying or selling India tea." (Jackson's Hist. Newton, p. 180.)

In Sept., 1774, Captain Benjamin Hammond was on a committee to prepare instructions, relative to the trouble, to the Representative to the General Court. (Jackson's Hist. Newton, p. 183.)

Jan. 2, 1775, Major Benjamin Hammond was one of a committee instructed to raise another Company of Militia. (Jackson's Hist. Newton, p. 183.)

In March, 1780, Col. Benjamin Hammond was one of a committee appointed to raise men for the war. (Jackson's Hist. Newton, p. 195.)

He was also chairman of a committee to purchase beef for the army, in 1779, 1780 and 1781. His account books, which are still extant and in possession of one of his descendants, are well kept and show expenditures for beef, in 1780, œ12,270, and in 1781, of œ12,761-15-10.

A great many of his papers are now in possession of the author of this work. These include receipts, copies of legal papers and notes. Some of these contain very valuable genealogical material, and there are many valuable autographs of residents of Newton and vicinity.

He was a farmer in Charlton, on the farm since possessed by his descendants in the Ward line. One of his daughters appears to have married a Percy (or Perry) and to have died April 30, 1813. Her given name does not appear.

David's grand-daughter, Mrs. Ruth (Ward) Dodge, now (1902) living in Spencer, Mass., aged 92 years, says that "one daughter married a Clapp; one married Benjamin Muzzy, and one married a Livermore; that all three of these lived and died in Jamaca, Vt."

It has not been learned which of these daughters married Muzzy, or which married Livermore.

There must have been another daughter, name now unknown.
