    Robert was of Kinross, and succeeded his father in lands on Milne Lead and Gala Hill.  In 1634 he acquired the lands of Little Seggie in County Kinross, in which he was seized to himself in life rent, and to his eldest son James in fee. These lands became the designation of his family. He also acquired the land of Ballingall.

    In 1643/7 Robert Steedman of Kinross lent 300 marks for the Scots army.

    His wife's father, Michael Henderson was of Turff Hills, of the family Fordel.

    He and Agnes were the parents of 3 sons and 2 daughters.

    The will (dated 9 May 1662) of Robert, the elder, of Saint Andrews Parish in Kenross, is shown in the Commisariat Records of that parish. (Scottish Records Society Publications; Register of Testaments, 1549-1800.)

    The old parochial records of Kinross were destroyed in the 19th century and data about their children is lost.  Some copies for the period of 1676 to 1699 were later found but the are blank from August 1689 to 6 march 1699.  Entries made in the parish register during 1676 to 1689 contain information which, because of stated family associations and joint ownership of land, clearly indicate that James and Margaret were the parents of at least one son.

    Robert Stedman maintained a Counting House, Wharf, Merchant House, etc., in Rotterdam, shipyards in Fife, and owned 13 ships which circled the world. Among his children were Captain John Stedman, Captain Charles Stedman, Judge Alexander Stedman, James Stedman, and others, who carried on the business from Rotterdam, Philadelphia, Charleston, and other places. The brothers set Baron Steigel in glass business in Pennsylvania, owned a forge, etc. They brought many of the German/Dutch settlers to Pennsylvania. Captain John Stedman was granted 10,000 acres in Dresden, Maine, for bringing settlers. By the marriage of Captain Charles iinto the family of Sir William Keith, Governor of Pennsylvania, and Dr. Thomas Graeme, important connections were established to lay the groundwork for the fortunes of the family.

    John Steedman was a joint tenant with John Hutton (thought to be a brother of his mother Margaret Hutton) in the lands of Wester Cowcairney (Cockairney, or Condcairnie) in County Kinross.

    His wife, whom he married about 1676, probably was a sister or daughter of Martine Meldrome of the same place but not a joint tenant.  Both John Hutton and Martine Meldrome witnessed the baptism of John's first known son Robert.
