    Notes
    • PHOEBE WIKOFF
      Jan. 2, 1915
Mrs. Phoebe Jane Wikoff, last Saturday night, Jan. 2, at 9:50 o'clock obeyed the voice of her Lord to come to him. She was ready and patiently waiting for the journey to her eternal home the Lord has prepared for them that love Him. She had lived 93 years, 5 months, and 18 days in this world. She was born near Carlisle, Warren county, July 15, 1821. She was the fifth of eighteen children of Benjamin and Jane Vanderveer, who came from Monmouth, New Jersey to Carlisle in 1813.

Mrs. Wikoff had eight brothers, five of whom served in the Union army in the civil war. Two of them perished in the war. The body of one of whom lies in an unknown grave in the Southland. She outlived all her brothers and sisters, the last two brothers passing on before her during the last year. David, 84, at Lincoln, Neb., March 18, and Uriah, 74, at Grinnell, Iowa, on November 4. She had seen six generations of her people, including her grandparents and her surviving descendants four sons and one daughter, 23 grandchildren and 24 great grandchildren.

On February 5th, 1845, at the Vanderveer homestead, across the road from the First Presbyterian church at Carlisle, she was married to William Ireton Wikoff. Their first home was just east of Amanda. They lived, excepting one year in Wood county and three years in Darke county just before the Civil war, all their married lived in Butler county. In 1862 they moved to the homestead east of Middletown. On October 1, 1871, Mr. Wikoff died and Mrs. Wikoff, with the three children still at home, remained on the farm. In 1892 she moved to her home at 609 East Fourth Street, in this city, where she extended her welcome and hospitality to a countless list of friends.

Mrs. Wikoff's five children survive her and are in order of age: Benjamin V., of Drywood, Kansas; Samuel S. and Henry M., of Middletown; Charles B. of Beattie, Kansas, and Mrs. Jane Gregory of Cincinnati. Samuel, Henry and Mrs. Gregory were all at their mother's bedside during her illness, until she passed away.

It was Mrs. Wikoff's custom to served dinner prepared by her own hands at Christmas at her own home to all the children who could be with her. On account of her sickness last Christmas was the only time she did not observe her custom but she had laid in store the bounties for the occasion.

Mrs. Wikoff served the Lord all the days of her life. She often said that from a babe in her mother's arms she regularly attended the Sabbath services morning and evening and as many times during the week as possible. She was a member of the church for four score years when about 14 years of age she united with the family congregation, the First Presbyterian church, Middletown, for 52 years, had worshipped in the old Presbyterian church building which is now the Lutheran Parish hall, and witnessed nine pastorates of the church. She was the oldest member of the congregation and next to the oldest person in Middletown, Mrs. Achsa A. Warwick, aunt of J.G. Reed, of 609 Woodlawn avenue being 96 years old the sixth of last November.

No sick friend was in need of care that Mrs. Wikoff's tender touch did not possibly supply and no one was long without the necessities and comforts of life when her abilities could bestow them. A good and great woman has passed in the humble walk of life before us. Her example, her faith, love and friendship, her vitality and vivacity, her kind words and tender deeds were great, and she leaves a noble inheritance to her children and friends. We can say of her as Dr. Findley said of her mother: "She has finished her course, she has kept her faith and already does she wear the crown that was laid up for her."

The funeral services were conducted at Mrs. Wikoff's late residence at 2:30 this afternoon by Rev. D.S. Smith, of the First Presbyterian church, assisted by Rev. J. M. Murchison, of the Oakland Presbyterian church. The interment was in Middletown cemetery.
