    Notes
    • Ref: NEHGS Register, Vol. 78, pp. 7-9 (1924)

John Winchester embarked in England, 6 April 1635, in the Elizabeth, the same ship in which came Clement Bates from Lydd, co. Kent, and Isaac Stedman and family from Biddenden, Co. Kent, and arrived a few weeks later at Boston in New England. After remaining there a short time, he went to Hingham, where Clement Bates had already settled, and received, 3 July 1636, a grant of five acres of land in that town, situated on the present South Street in West Hingham.

John Winchester of New England married at Scituate in the Plymouth Colony, 15 Oct 1638, Hannah Sealis, baptised at Biddenden, co. Kent, 8 Jan 1614/15, daughter of Richard Sealis of Biddenden (a parish about five miles from Cranbrook), one of a group of Kentish men who had gone to Scituate in 1634 with Rev. John Lothrop. It is, therefore, not improbably that John Winchester and Hannah Sealis were acquainted in the old country.

John Winchester was made a freeman 9 March 1637 [1637/8], joined the Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company of Boston in 1638, and in the military disturbance of 1644-45 was one of those who were fined for the trouble which he and his neighbors had caused, but the fine was remitted the following year because his slender means (Records of the Colony of Massachusetts Bay, vol. 3, p. 80)

Some time after 1650, possibly early in 1655, he removed to the Muddy River district of Boston, now the town of Brookline, and on 28 Dec. 1657 bought the so-called Ronton farm, "now in ye possession of ye said Jno Winchester" (Suffolk Deeds, lib. 3, fo. 82), from the heirs of William Hibbens for £60. This consisted of 140 acres in all, being two farms of 80 and 40 acres of upland, lying on or near the present Harvard Street, near Coolidge Corner, Brookline, and extending back over the summit of Corey Hill, and along the highway towards the Cambridge (later Brighton) line.
