    Notes
    • Robert Stedman and his wife Ann were the English pioneers in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Robert Stedman is said to have been born in England, but he emigrated to America from Holland.  The earliest authority for that statement is a memorandum said to be copied from an almanac dated 1769 and written by his great-grandson Dr. John Stedman.  Also Francis D. Stedman (b. 1801) when a boy at Exeter was called Dutchman by his playmates.

He was in Cambridge in 1638 and was made a freeman there on 14 March 1638/39.  He was like to have been the brother or close relative of John Stedman of Cambridge (b. 1601).

He likely married his wife Ann before they arrived in Cambridge.  Our first record of him in Cambridge is in 1638 which was the year their first child was born.  He and Ann may have married in Holland before he came to America.

They lived on the north side of Winthrop Street between Holyoke and Dunster Streets.  The Newtown, Mass., records show that in 1638 William Bloomfield transferred to Robert Stedman the house and lot "on the north side of Winthrop Street, between Dunster and Brighton Streets," which property, according to Paige's "Map of Cambridge in 1635," was the Simon Sackett Homestead.  This house lot was enlarged by purchase till it extended through to Mt. Auburn and Holyoke Streets.  In this form it remained in the family until nearly 1880.
