    Notes
    • John Mac Lisle was probably born in 1846 at the farm which his father William was leasing in Prairie Twp.  Shortly afterwards, his father assumed ownership of his grandfather James Lisle's farm in Hamilton Twp and they lived there until it was sold to Robert and John Lisle in 1849. At that time, the family purchased land in Alton in Prairie Twp and moved there.  He and his family were recorded in the 1850, 1860, and 1870 Federal Census in Prairie Twp.  He attended common schools in Prairie Twp.

Claiming to be 18 years old, he enlisted as a Private in Company G. of the 88th Ohio Volunteer Infantry Regiment on 1 March 1864.  He was mustered out with his company on 3 July 1865.

After serving in the Civil War, he graduated from Hiram College and then studied medicine at the Starling Medical College in Columbus, graduating in 1875 with a degree of Doctor of Medicine.

After graduating he removed to Roseville in Perry County to practice. Whilst there, he met Eva Gates whom he married in a Prebyterian ceremony presided over by the Rev H. H. Beeman in her parent's home in Saltillo on Wednesday, 27 Dec 1875 at 7:00 p.m.  Their first child, Leslie Mac Lisle, was born there on 10 Mar 1877.

By the time of the birth of their second child, Dallas Gypsi Lisle, on 1 July 1878, they had moved to Pataskala in Licking County.  Their third child, Thomas Gates Lisle, was also born there on 8 Feb 1881.  Their neighbors in Pataskala were the Rev. Thomas P. Kohr and his wife Adele (Coe).

On 1 July 1882 Eva gave birth to twins Alice and Allen Lisle.  As with the other instances of boy/girl twins running through the Wigton / Gates / Lisle line, they were not healthy and they died six weeks later on 11 Aug 1882.  This tragedy had a profound effect on the family.  Eva contracted tuberculosis (consumption) and went down hill steadily over then next year, and she died on 26 Sept 1883 at age 29.

The effect of Eva's death on John and his family was longlasting.  Eva's aunt Victoria Gates Nagel came to help take care of the children. Eventually, the children lived with her for a while.  Dallas remained with her a least though high school.  I believe that the boys Leslie and Tom spent time with her, on the farm at Alton, and some time with their father up until the time he moved back to Columbus about 1895.

After Eva's death, he removed to Marysville in Union County where he practiced medicine, but his children lived elsewhere.  His neighbors from Pataskala must have comforted him by introducing him to Adele Kohr's young widowed sister Martha ("Mattie") Coe Schoonover.  Mattie's husband had died in 1882.  Rev. Kohr married them in Franklin Co. on 15 October 1884.  Family records indicate that John and Eva's children did not live with them.

After his second marriage, John continued to practice medicine.  John and Mattie had their only child, Marguerite, in Celina, Mercer County, OH, on 6 July 1888.

It is not known for sure when John and Mattie moved to Columbus. However, it seems that they bought their house at 224 Tenth Ave. about 1895.  City Directories from that period begin to list him there.

By 1900, Leslie and Tom are living there and attending college at Ohio State.  In addition to practicing medicine, John and his brothers James and Lewis seem to have done a number of real estate investments.

Towards the end of his life, John and Mattie spent much of their winters somewhere in Florida, and they had a summer home in Michigan.  He died about 6 weeks after returning from a trip to Florida in his home in Columbus from a heart problem on 4 May 1916.

His funeral was held in the family home on Saturday morning, 6 May 1916, with the Rev. William M. Hindeman officiating.  He was buried next to his wife Eva in the Lisle family plot in Alton Cemetery.

He was a lifelong devout Presbyterian and was a member of the Northminster Presbyterian Church in Columbus.  For 30 years he served as an elder.  He was a member of the Columbus Academy of Medicine and a Mason.

According to Carter, he also practiced in Beaver town (Beavertown, Washington Co.?).  I have no confirmation of this.  His obituary also says that he was the head of a medical institution in Marysville.  I also have no confirmation of that.
