    Rev. Francis: (from Roger Ouston's directory of Owston and Ouston families).

    He received his Bachelor of Arts Degree on 28 Jan 1848 - probably from Bishop's College in Bristol where he became an Assistant Master in 1848. In 1849, he became a deacon and in 1850 was ordained priest. He was appointed Vicar of Pirbright in Surrey in 1851 and, in 1855, received his Master of Arts Degree from St Catherine's College, Cambridge. In 1888, he was appointed Vicar of West Mersea, Essex and in 1892, Vicar of Layer Breton in the same County. According to his journal at Guildford Museum, he and his new wife (2041) left Gravesend for Africa in Oct 1850 on the ship 'Mary Harrison'. On 16 Dec 1850, they landed at Capetown; however, a Kaffir outbreak prevented them from proceeding to Grahamstown where his new job awaited. While in South Africa, he wrote about the flora and fauna he encountered. On 1 Aug 1851, they returned to England. Victoria County History of North Yorkshire Vol 2, p 452: The Rev F Owston was patron of St Mary's Church, Levisham from 1869 to 1877.
