    Notes:

Andrew Sharp, Sr. was born in New York according to census records. According to some genealogy records, he was born on 3 May 1790 in Bennington, Genesee Co., NY; however, that area was not significantly open to settlers at that time due to the Indian situation.

He married Hannah Stedman before 1826 probably in Bennington, NY where her family had settled before 1818 and where he was enumerated in the census in 1830 as Andrus Sharp.  (Note: there was an Andrus Sharp enumerated in Columbia County, New York, in 1800, who had a son who could be Andrew Sharp, Sr.)

In the 1830 census, there are several people listed with Andrew that are not consistent with family.  Could he have been married before Hannah? Did he and Hannah marry earlier?  We really do not know when they married.

Andrew Sharp does not seem to be indexed in the 1840 census of Bennington, but it is known that he and his family removed from New York to Michigan about 1840.  They are also not indexed in the Livingston County, Michigan, census in 1840 where they are found in 1850 and 1860.

They are thought to have had about 14 children; however, we can find records of only 10.

This is probably a long shot, but I can trace my Sharp family living in New York and arriving in Livingston Co., Michigan in 1837. My 3rd Great Grandfather Andrew Sharp (b. 1790), bought land from Josiah Cook Stedman who turned out to be a step-brother-in-law. However, of the two people who witnessed the transaction on Nov. 14, 1837, one was named Betsey L Sharp. I have been trying to identify Betsey (L) Sharp for some time. Middle initial appears to be different from your Betsey. I have no documentation on any of Andrew's siblings, but his parents were Richard and Leah Sharp.

Anyone out there with connections to John Sharp, born 12/31/1804.Died in 1889
in Newaygo County,Mich. Place of birth in question. He married Betsey E.
    Davis. They had eight children,Harriett(b. 1830);Amos(b. 1832);Milo(b.
    1836);Frances(b. 1842);Mary Jane(b.1844);James(b. 1849) and Laura(b. 1851).
After several years of research,we have not proven where John was
born,or who his parents were.Would love to communicate with anyone who may
be able to give a hint. Some people say John was born in Vermont. Some say New
York. Some say Connecticut and some say Holland. Some have indicated his
father was also a John Sharp.None of these people seem to be able to
document place of birth or parentage.

    Hi,

I have pretty much the same information.  There are a few exceptions.

Hannah Stedman who married Andrew Sharp (my 3rd Great Grandfather) was born 23 Jun 1798 and she died 11 Sep 1870, both are buried in Chilson Cem., Genoa Twp., Livingston Co., MI.

It appears that Josiah C Steadman bought the land in Genoa Twp., Livingston Co., MI about a year before Andrew and Hannah purchased it in 14 Nov 1837.  I have the record of the deed from Livingston Co., MI. Josiah was a brother to Miriam Stedman who married Edward Eugene Latson who lived in the next parcel.  They were half-brother/sister to Hannah Stedman (my 3rd Great Grandmother).

Betsey L. Sharp is listed as in attendance along with Amos S. Adams, the county surveyor.

I also have the five children from William Stedman first marriage to Mary Pierce and the four children with Mercy Cook.

I have Josiah married to Sarah French 18 Aug 1848 in Eaton Rapids, Eaton Co., MI.

As far as the DNA study, there are no males in my immediate family.  My uncle just died, but he had a son and two grandsons.  I’m trying to contact them, but my guess is that they have little interest.

Who this Betsey L Sharp is, I have no idea.  She signed with a X.  I do know that Andrew Sharp parents were Richard and Leah Sharp, but I have no records of any siblings except the possibility of a Jacob Sharp born 27 Jun 1797, Fredericksburg Twp., Lennox, Ontario, Canada who married Tabitha Scott (Wilcox).  His parents were a Richard and Leah Sharp. Can’t prove this as a relationship, but my guess would be that after the Revolutionary War the Sharp’s skipped to Canada.

    Notes:

William Stedman, Jr., was born in South Kingstown, RI, in 1769.

He came to Tyringham with his brother Thomas in the late 1790s.  He is recorded in the 1800 census in Tyringham.  His wife is listed as 26-45 and a female 10-16 is listed as living with them.

He may have married in Rhode Island before removing to Tyringham, although there is no record of his marriage, and we do not know his wife's maiden name from any marriage record.

William's brother Thomas was said to have come to Tyringham with brother-in-law Williams. At one time I looked to see if she could be a Williams. I have since discovered that Thomas's wife's twin sister married a Williams. The 1800 census is quite clear that William was in Tyringham in 1800.

Five children are recorded as being born in Tyringham.

In 1818, he was in Caledonia in Genesee County, New York when he signed a quit claim deed against his share of his father's property in Tyringham.

A William Stidman is recorded in the 1820 census for Bennington, Genesee Co., NY.

In the 1830 census, he is recorded in Bennington, Genesee Co., NY.

In the petition to the Court of Probate in connection with his mother's estate on 1 October 1839, he was listed as "residing in Genesee, State of New York."

In the 1840 census, he seems to be enumerated with his son Daniel in Bennington, NY.

When his mother's estate was settled on 5 January 1847, it was granted "to the children of William Stedman, a deceased son of said intestate, whose names are unknown, said sum of twenty dollars and sixty one cents to be equally divided between them."

Dear John - I just read your post note to Dianne Richards entry on RootsWeb. - Yes William Stedman Jr., son of William and Hannah did have two wives. But the first wife Mollie Pierce/Pease died in Geneseo, Livingston Co., NY June 8, 1808. He remarried Miss Mercy Cook in 1809 probably somewhere in WNY. He left RI went to Mass with his family then in 1808 he went to Geneseo, Livingston County, then to Riga in Monroe Co., NY, then to Wheatland in roughly the same area and then came to Bennington, Wyoming Co, NY in 1817 where you will also find Isaac Pierce family. Just wanted to let you know. If you are wondering who I am please read the attach letter only as info not as as an ad for research. Sincerely, Anita Ripstein Hayes

    From Anita Hayes:
William and some of his family still in same area near Danley Corners
while Jonathan and George moved closer to Bennington Center area. Also tells me most of the kids married between 1820 and 1830 - a time frame with very few records for the area.

    Census Analysis:

    Male     60-70 : William Stedman, Jr., b. 1769
    Female 50-60 : Mercy Cook, b. 1774
    Male     15-20 : Josiah C. Stedman, abt 1810
    Female 15-20 : Miriam, b.  1812
    Male     15-20 : George Stedman, b. abt. 1815
    Male     10-15 : Ebenezer Stedman, b. abt. 1817

I found a Josiah C. Stedman, born about 1810 in the 1850 Michigan census.  I am going to postulate that this is the last of the three sons: Josiah Cook Stedman.
