    Notes:

James and Caroline Stedman were first located in Madison Co., MS, in 1830 with one son (Rufus).

Two land transactions were found in Book A of Madison Co.  On July 12, 1830, James sold the W 1/2 of the NE 1/4 of Section 33, Township 9, Range 4 East for $150.00 (Page 703).

    On Aug. 3, 1833, he sold the N 1/2 of the W 1/2 of NE Section 1, Township 8, Range 2 East (40 acres) for $175.00 (Page 853).

In both cases, Caroline affixed her mark (X) atesting to the fact that this was her voluntary act without fear, threats, or compulsion from her husband.  This statement is a dower's release.  It is interesting to note that STIDMAN  was used on all legal documents.

James and Caroline Stedman moved to Carroll Co., MS, about 1836 with other members of James's family.  The 1840 census of Carroll Co., MS. shows them with 5 sons and a daughter.

By 1850, they had moved to Choctaw Co., MS. where they remained until they died.  In 1870, Caroline was listed with son George's household in the Dido Community.

Their burial place is unknown but believed to be Spring Hill Cemetery as there are numerous graves marked only with native stone.

  1. 8.  Eli Stedman, Jr. was born Abt 1777, ____, Newberry Co., SC (son of Elias "Eli" Stedman and Miss Pemberton); died Aft 1850, ____, Carroll Co., MS.

    Other Events:

    • 1800 Census: 1800
    • 1810 Census: 1810
    • 1820 Census: 1820
    • 1830 Census: 1830
    • 1840 Census: 1840
    • 1850 Census: 2 Sep 1850

    Notes:

Eli Stedman was born in the present day Newberry County, SC, about 1777 (based on being age 73, born SC in the 1850 Census).

Eli Stedman was witness to the will of Mathew Brooks in Newberry Co., SC. on 26 Sep 1794.  (Will proven 9 Jul 1796, Book B, Page 47.)  At present, no other SC records have been found for him.

According to LDS records, he married Nancy Hardman (1779 - after 1828), daughter of Uriah Hardman and Frances Chandler, about 1800.  Joseph Earle Steadman speculated that she may have been related to Sarah Pemberton (wife of George Pemberton, Sr.), but there is no evidence of that in the known family of Uriah Hardman.

    Georgia Wills Oglethorpe

    Page 103   HARDEMAN, URIAH. April 14, 1800; Feb. 3, 1801.
To wife Fanny Hardeman all estate except the houses which will go to my sons Samuel and Isaiah. To dau. Nancy Stedman, wife of Eli Steadman, the land on Clouds Creek. At death of wife, residue to be divided among sons Samuel, Isaiah, dau. Stedman. My sons Lethey Allen, John, William and dau. Elizabeth Hardeman. Exrs: Wife and son Samuel. Wit: Jesse Willingham, James Cadenhead, William Hardeman.

He has not been identified on a census for 1800.

He moved to Kentucky and on 31 August 1807 in Livingston county he was granted 200 acres of land on Dry Fork of Eddy Creek, south of Green River.  (see Willard Rouse Jellson, Kentucky Land Grants, p. 408).

He has not been identified on a census for 1810.

At some time before 1812 he disposed of this land and returned to Newberry County, SC.

He has not been identified on a census for 1820.

He later moved to Tuscalosa Co., AL, where he acquired other land that on 24 January 1828, he and Nancy conveyed to Donald O. Brooks. (Alabama Records, Vol. 7, p. 41).

He seems to have been recorded in the 1830 Census for Madison Co., MS

He was recorded in the 1840 Census for Carroll Co., MS, on p. 40.

On the 1850 federal census of Carroll Co., MS, Eli was shown living with Henry D. and Alice (Stedman) Smith.  (Southern Division on 5 Sep 1850, Page 196, House 32, Family 40, Age 73, born SC)

Based on the 1850 Census, the approximate birth years and places for his children were:

James Hardman Steadman    age 49, born SC?  (about 1801)  (however, 1860 census is age 62, born KY and reading is clear)
George P. Steadman              age 45, born KY     (about 1805)
Jesse B. Steadman                age 41, born KY    (about 1809)
Sabra (Steadman) Jones        age 37, born KY    (about 1813)
Bluford Steadman                   age 36, born KY    (about 1814)
Mary (Steadman) Cotton         age 32, born AL     (about 1818)
Alice (Steadman) Smith           age ? , born ?   (unreadable - but another reading was -age 31, born NC)
Samuel Steadman - not located  (1801, SC?)
    Joshuay Steadman - not located (1812, SC?) - ? Forsythe Co., GA, p. 187?

Based on the births of the children, it would seem that Eli was in Kentucky for a longer time than otherwise expected.

He died intestate sometime after 1850; therefore children listed cannot be "proven" but all research indicates that he is the father of the children listed above.
    ____________

Helen Tice  of Memphis has shared (January 2009):

About 1807, Eli and Nancy moved from SC to Livingston Co. Ky where on 31 Aug 1807, he was granted 22 A. of land on Dry Fork of Eddy Creek, south of the Green River (Willard Rouse Jellson's "Ky Land Grants", p. 400).

Sometime before 1812, Eli disposed of this land and returned to Newberry.

They later moved to Tuscaloosa Co., AL, where he acquired other land, which on 24 Jan 1818, he and Nancy conveyed to Daniel O. Brooks (AL Records, Vol. 7, p. 41).

At the time of the 1850 MS census (page 197, house 32) his wife being dead, he was living with his daugher Alice and her husband, Henry D. Smith. ( I have a problem with Alice being his dau., there is some relation, but I'm not sure what it is.) BUT, in "Letters from Forest Place", a plantation family's correspondence, 1846-1881 (a collection of letters over a period of 35 years by members of the Thos. A. Watkins family of Carroll Co., MS), p. 217, from a letter dated 12 April 1861: "There has been much sickness and some fatility in the county this spring and past winter. Mr. Turner & Mrs. Young have both died this year - ALSO, OLD MRS. STEADMAN." The appendex says 14 April 1861. Probably speaking of Marcy Mills Steadman, widow of Jesse B. Steadman, as Marcy died Nov. 1861.

According to the late Mrs. Gayden B. Poteet of Greenwood, Ms. a well known genealogist, Eli Steadman and probably Nancy, are buried at Old Bluff Springs Cemetery, located between Vaiden, MS and Carrollton, MS. The cemetery is very overgrown, and gravestones are almost impossible to see. Some time back, the county ran a road thru the old cemetery, covering quite a few graves, including my GGGGrandfather John Read, and his son, my GGGrandfather, Jesse Read. I have a signed and notarized from Roby Read declaring that he had seen the graves and that they had been covered by a County road. ALSO, FULL OF TICKS - TRUST ME ON THAT ONE!
