Notes:
Nathan Alexander Stedman, III, was a Revolutionary War soldier.
He and his two brothers, Winship and Elisha, migrated to North Carolina in 1784.
Nathan represented Chatham County in the State Legislature and for many years was one of the Special Jucices of the County Court.
From the Pittsboro, NC, newspaper "The Communicator", 25 November 1847:
"Died in this county on the 13th inst. Nathan Stedman, Sen. Esq., in the 86th year of his age. He was born in the township of Ashford, Windham County, Ct, where he resided with his parents until the commencement of our Revolutionary difficulties.
"In the year 1776, being only 14 years of age, he enlisted in the Army of the Revolution for three months, and was marched to Providence, R.I., where he was garrisoned until the time of his enlistment expired.
"At the commencement of that struggle, the resources of America did not permit the construction of ships fitted to contend with those of England, and, of course, the Merchantmen owned by our citizens were incompetent for that purpose. The great want of munitions of war rendered it necessary that means be adopted for providing them from the supplies of Great Britain. For this purpose, private vessels were commissioned by certain of the colonies, the Continental Congress, General Washington, and even the commanders of Squadrons, to intercept vessels containing these supplies and capture them for the benefit of the colonies.
"Thousands of hardy young and enterprising young men from the Eastern states, from their habits and aptitudes for sea service were induced to incur the danger of the seas in this mode in preference to remaining on shore. The Subject of this notice having previously served for some time in the capacity of a clerk on a Merchantman and there contracted a fondness for marine life. After the expiration of his enlistment above mentioned, he joined one of these authorized Privateers. His service there was anything from easy or destitute of privation or peril. He was engaged in many a well fought battle, was wounded himself, and had a brother younger than himself killed at his side. [The younger brother killed may have been his brother John for whom we have no data other than a birth record in 1764.] The vessel, on which he served, was finally captured by a British Man-of-War, and he, with the rest of the crew, were conveyed to the city of St. George on one of the Bermuda Islands where they remained prisoners until near the close of the war, when they were exchanged.
"In the year 1784, he migrated to North Carolina with his two brothers where he resided until his death. The deceased formerly represented Chatham County in the State Legislature and for many years was one of the Special Justices of our County Court. He was a man of strong mind, sound judgement, amiable disposition, and of a kind and benevolent heart. He always enjoyed the confidence and esteem of the community in which he resided and died without an enemy.
"He had many years been a consistent member of the Church of Christ Episcopal and closed his long and eventful career with a full reliance upon the promise of his Redeemer."
This write-up may be found in the North Carolina State Library in Raleigh, NC.
Wheeler's Historical Sketches of North Carolina documents some of his public service. On page 87, it lists Nathan Stedman in the House of Representatives of NC in 1827 and in the NC Senate in 1832-1833. On page 108 of the same publication, Nathan Stedman is listed as the Comptroller of the State of North Carolina in 1834.

==========================================
In the name of God, Amen, I Elisha Stedman of the
Town of Fayetteville in the State of North Carolina,
merchant, being of wound and disposing mind and memory,
but languishing on a bed of sickness and bearing in
mind the uncertainty of human life, do on this eighteenth
day of September, in the year of our Lord, One Thousand,
Eight hundred and thirty-two, make, publish and disclose
this my last Will and Testament in manner and form
following:- that is to say:-
First, I give and devise to my executors hereinafter
named, all my estate real and personal, for the payment
of all my legal debts. To this end, they, my said
executors shall have full power to sell and dispose of, and
make title to any part of my said Estate, real or personal,
in fee simple or otherwise:- they first consulting and
obtaining the opinion and advise of General James
Owen of Wilmington, Major John Owen of Bladen, and
John Huske Esquire of Fayetteville on this subject.
Secondly, And whereas my son, James Owen Stedman has it
in contemplation to enter in a course of Theological
studies, to prepare himself for the ministry of the
Gospel, and as the change of circumstances which my
death might occasion, might possibly circumscribe his
means of advantageously prosecuting his studies at a distant
Seminary, it is my will and desire, that he postpone
the said course, for the space of twelve months after
my decease; and, that he, together with my son, John
Madison Stedman, take my stock of goods now on hand,
at cost; and trade together, for their joint benefit, as
merchants and co-partners, for the space of one year
after my decease, in the new store that is now
finishing.
Thirdly, After my said debts shall be fully paid
and satisfied, I give and devise the rest and residue
of my said estate, whether real or personal, or both
to my four sons, Thomas William Stedman, John Madison
Stedman, James Owen Stedman, and Denny Porterfield
Stedman, equally, to them, and their heirs and assigns
forever.
Lastly, I do hereby make, constitute, and appoint my
two sons, John Madison Stedman, and James Owen Stedman
Executors of this my last Will and Testament; and I do
hereby further constitute and appoint my Son Denny
Porterfield Stedman co-executor of this my said last
will, when he shall have attained the age of Twenty
one years, but this latter appointment is not to
change the authority of my two executors first names,
during his minority.
E. Stedman (SEAL)
This last will was
signed, sealed, published,
and declared by the
Testator in our presence
and witnessed by us in
presence of each other,
the day and year first
above mentioned.

The A. A. McKethan House
The home of Alfred Augustus McKethan was located on the north side of Person Street, at the corner of Cool Spring Street (address: 245 Person St.) in Fayetteville, NC. The land on which it was built was originally owned by Mark Russell, who sold it to Elisha Stedman. It is believed that John Stedman, son of Elisha, built the house. The exact date of construction of the house is not known, but its style has been described as typical of the Post-Revolutionary period. It was built of longleaf pine with square handcut nails and extra-large handmade brick. The house was purchased from James O. Stedman by A. A. McKethan in 1838, when Mr. Stedman moved to Alabama.
Nearby was the McKethan Carriage Factory, located on a large lot on Person and Dick Streets. It was established by A. A. McKethan and Charles T. Gardner in 1835, and was originally known as the Gardner-McKethan Carriage and Coach Company. In 1866, Gardner sold his interest to McKethan and it bcame known as the A. A. McKethan and Sons Carriage Factory. Many of the apprentices at this factory lived on the third floor of the McKethan home.
A. A. McKethan died in 1890, and his son A. A. McKethan, Jr. moved with his family into the old McKethan home. The home continued to be occupied by some of his descendants until the early 1960's.
In 1966, it became necessary to raze the house, bringing much sorrow to the many grandchildren and great-grandchildren of A. A. McKethan who had such fond memories of the Old Home. Many of them kept mementos such as boards or bricks from the home, and my mother incorporated one of the beautifully carved mantels into her home in Florida.
Some of the above information was taken from articles in the Fayetteville Observer (March 27, 1966) and the Fayetteville Observer-Times (March 7, 1982).

He had nine children, seven surviving in 1870.
Several of his letters may be found under "Letters".: A W. Stedman wrote a letter to his Uncle James in 1870. (see "Letters") I believe that this W. Stedman was the oldest son of William C. Stedman.
Sarah Tabb Sturdivant was a sister to Margaret Sturdivant who married David Porter Stedman, William Stedman's brother.

Subject: letter was written by Will. C. Stedman
I am sending this letter to the message board from a researcher who also is looking into the Stedman Family, however, we have discovered that there may not be a connection between the two families. The copy of the letter written by William C. Stedman is soo rich with the mindset and description of a new person coming here to Arkansas, and placing a plea for family to follow him. It sets the tone of how many of our families may have been lured into leaving their homes on the Eastern Seaboard and to travel West to Arkansas.
Kindly,
Carolann

I can see that we are not of the same line. I have never found a connection between the NC Stedmans and the SC Stedmans.
I did think that you might find the following letter interesting. If was in the Nathan Stedman Family Bible. Thank you for answering me. I have also placed a link below to my genealogy website.

======================================
The following letter was written by Will. C. Stedman to a cousin.?
"Jackson County, Arkansas, April 27th, 1861
"My dear Cousin,
"I received your welcome letter dated the 10th of last month which afforded me a great pleasure I assure you. I hope you will continue the correspondence and write frequently. I have nothing particularly to write now as I wrote so fully to my brother in the letter you saw. He has not yet answered that letter neither has George nor has Hasten. You will be good enough to show them my complaint to them and see if it will not stir them up to this necessary duty and especially with near relations. I hope that Cousin Emiline will write also. I am still well pleased with the country. I have seen nothing since I wrote to you to lesson the high opinion I formed of it when I first saw it, but in fact my favorable opinion of the country has considerably increased. There is however one drawback to my comfort and that is the lack of my relations and friends which I left behind. I do hope they will come to this good and great country. There is a plenty of good land that can be procured now for them all to be accommodated with good homes. There is a plenty of good land accessible to one of the best navigable streams in the United States at prices varying from $5 to $10 an acre which will never wear out and produce from eight to twelve barrels of corn an acre and cotton a bale to the acre of 500 lbs. Not a stone in the way and the water is very good. Health of the country is pretty good, more subject however to the chills and fever than where you live.
A great deal of this complaint prevails here on account of exposure among the people than of the natural causes that may exist. The very indiferent houses that people live in. Many of them indulge in laziness and in drunkenness which will of course engender disease more or less. The community where we live is very good, convenient to several churches occupied by Methodist, Cumberland Presbyterians, Missionary Baptists and Cambellites who teaches the most absurd doctrines of any class of Christians that I have any known or read of. Tell Uncle Johnston that a strange thing has happened in the world to many individuals as it would be for him to take a notion to move out here. He is about my age and I suppose could stand the trip as well as me. What a strange sight it would be for him to come here and make 50 bales of cotton and 500 barrels of corn and raise as many hogs, cattle and sheep and also horses and mules as he might desire. If I had moved out here instead of going to Wake, I might now be worth ($10,000) ten thousand dollars.
"I am made to lament the sad condition in which our country is now placed in. We had good grounds to hope, from the tone of the inaugural of Mr. Lincoln that the country would have been saved. But recent developments from Washington indicate a very different course to what we had a right to expect. The most sanguine amongst the union men seem now to despair of settling the difficulties between the two sections of this country. What a pity that such a great country as ours should be destroyed and that by designing and aspiring men and the great probability is we shall have a civil war. Brother arrayed against Brother and relations against relations. How much better it would be to settle the difficulties without resort to arms if we must divide. Indeed I think there is very little chance now to effect a reconciliation and I am for the south if the country is divided, right or wrong.
"But after this digression about the condition of the country, I will return to describe the friendliness and cleverness of my neighborhood, notwithstanding they have come from various states, yet they all, as one man, has manifested their friendship. I will name an act of one man among many as a specimen. He proposed to give me an introduction to a mercantile house in Jacksonport, so that I might avail myself the privilege of going on credit to any amount I think proper and after I lost my horse which was worth about two hundred dollars, the only bad luck I have had of any magnitude since I left home, he proposes to sell me a good mule worth $150 and wait with me until Christmas. Thus you see I have friends even among strangers and although I may not have an occasion to exercise the privilege of the credit, yet it shows a friendliness I appreciate very highly. These favorable offers were made by a man very well off, and without any hint from me that I wished such a thing. We have an assurance by the guardian, that we can rent the place we live on until the youngest child become of age, which will be about ten years., and if I should buy land in this neighborhood, I think it will be the best for me to rent until I can improve my place comfortably. However this will greatly depend upon my friends coming out here for there are some large bodies of land here that will not be sold only altogether. Enough to make a dozen good settlements. I would be willing to be one so we can settle a neighborhood of North Carolinians. We have done planting our corn and cotton crop and have commenced plowing over our corn. The preparation of the whole of our farms is in excellent condition. The land is rich and if we can have our health and good season we may calculate on a good crop. We have in cultivation about fifty five of sixty acres, so you can see we have not been idle thus far.
"I must bring my letter a close by the blessing of God we are in good health at this time and hope your family and all of our friends and relations are enjoying the same inestimable blessing. Sallie and the children join me in love to Uncle Johnston, Cousin Mary and the children and also to Cousin Emiline and yourself.
"Yours very respectfully
"Will C. Stedman
"P.S. Tell Uncle Johnson and Cousin Mary to write to us. "

_____________
The following article on the Stedman/Steadman family was written by Russell O'Neal in "Coldwater (Yesterday and Today)," published in connection with Tennessee Homecoming '86, at page 72:
Stedman/Steadman
The Steadman family of Lincoln County started with Elisha Hurlbut "Bally" Stedman, who came to Lincoln County sometime before 1829. Elisha was the son of Nathan Alexander Stedman and Ann Frances Clark of Chatham County, North Carolina . . .
Elisha Hurlbut Stedman (1805-1870) - born in N. C., married to Martha Rebecca Griffis (1810-1854) who was the daughter of Herbert and Frances Griffis. Elisha served for many years in the county government in several positions: magistrate, Justice of the Peace, and served on many committees. He was a prosperous farmer in the Coldwater-Molino area all his adult life. Elisha and Rebecca Stedman had ten children: Nathan Pleasant (1830-1862) died in the Battle of Murfreesboro while fighting for the Confederacy, Mary Elizabeth (1832-1905) married first Alfred R. Smith and after his death, she married John Jarman Summerford, Sara Frances Stedman (1834-1889) married John Wesley Watson, William Hurlbut born 1837 and married Wilies Crowder, Martin Luther (1837-1918) married Amanda Elizabeth Bryan, George Washington (1840-1894) married Mary Jane Marshall, Thomas Ragland Stedman (1843-1928) married Mary A. Phagan and later married Mrs. Lucy Jones, Martha Louisa (1845-1925) married John James Wesley and later married Claunch Blair, James Winship born 1847, married Mrs. Ella Bell (Wilcox) Hatcher, and Nancy Rebecca (1850-1926) married Newton Green Maddox.
Martin Luther Steadman served six months with McRea's battalion of sharp shooters and afterwards was transferred to the 1st Arkansas Regiment. He loved the cause for which he fought. He and Amanda Elizabeth had three children, W. H., A. E., and Eula P. Gray.
His son, W. H. (Hurley) Steadman lived around the hill from Coldwater on a tributary of Coldwater Creek. He was the weatherman for the area from 1910 to 1935, having some of the instruments to measure rainfall, etc. He was also a veterinarian. He wrote many of the obituaries for the people of Coldwater.
