  1. 1.  Radulphus de BartonRadulphus de Barton was born Abt 1154, ____, Co. York, England, UK; died Unknown, ____, Co. York, England, UK.

    Other Events:

    • Name: Ralph de Barton
    • Residence: ____, Co. York, England, UK

    Notes:

Radulphus (Ralph) de Barton was living in County York, England, during the time of King Henry II (1154-1189).

The lineage described was documented by Joseph Earle Steadman in his 1987 Barton-Stedman Genealogy and was contained in the so-called Barton-Stedman Memoir compiled by John Stedman of Bath, County Somerset, England, and privately printed in 1857.  The lineage was authentically proved, and passed inspection by the British College of Arms.

The writer of the memoir states that "barton" is a Saxon word, and the subject family "doubtless assumed its name from a village near old Walton in the West Riding of Yorkshire, England, where they were probably located before or at the period of the Norman conquest."  Though the Domesday book mentions no person of the name "Barton" living in that locality, the family soon emerged from obscurity and took rank among the magnates of the land.  A supposed branch of this family existed in the old French provinces of Bretagne (Brittany) and Normandy, where they were known as "De Barton" and bore the same arms: "Gules, annulets Or", meaning "a shield of red color with small rings of gold color depicted thereon."

The lineage shown in the memoir mentions but few dates of birth and death for the persons named therein; however, each person is related to an event which pertained to himself.  In the following listed generations, only shown is the direct line of descent from Radulphus (Ralph) de Barton, the first known ancestor to Alexander Barton who changed his name to Charles Stedman.

    Notes:

Sir William Barton, de Oswaldkirk, Co. York, Knight, the eldest son, was Lord of Oswaldkirk, and between 1220-1241 "gave to the Monastery of [St. Mary] of York, 6 oxgangs of Land in the Town of Barton, with all their Appurtenances, to wit, those four, which William, his Father, bought of William, Son of Radulphus."

The exact year in which this gift was made was not specified, but the Record bears that the Deed of Gift was witnessed by Robert Skegnose, then Steward of the Abbey of St. Mary, of York, and a marginal note states that Skegnose was Steward from 4th to 25th Henry III.

It is manifest that in 1239 some misunderstanding or dispute existed respecting the Advowson of the Church of Oswaldkirk, as a "final Concord" was held at York, the morrow after St. John Baptist, in that year about the Advowson.  What the matter in dispute was, or how the "final Concord" was determined, does not appear.

In 1259, Sir William made a Composition with the Abbot of Bellalanda, about the pounding of sheep in Ampliford, in the immediate vicinity of Oswaldkirk.  It is material to note the possession of Ampliford, in the House of Oswaldkirk, at this period, as it passed, subsequently, to the House of Fryton and Whenby, Co., York; and two centuries after, among other Lands, then in the possession of Thomas Barton, Alderman of York, younger son of Sir John de Barton, of Fryton and Whenby, Knt., was confiscated to the Crown, upon the Alderman being attainted of treason (about 1460).

Sir William married Emma - they were both living in 1267 - and in that year "rendered an account of half a mark, for the having an Assize."

See Rymer's Faedera.  MS. Harl. British Museum, 805, Fol. 39. Inquisition.  Carta de Barton.  Carta de Monasterio de Bellalanda in Com. Ebor. Roll of Arms, Henry III, Burtons Monasticon Ebor.

The following extract from the Roll of Arms, Temp., Henry III (1216-1272), shews that his Armorial Bearings were recorded at that period, "Monsire de Barton de Fryton port d'ermiine, sur les fes gules, trois annulets d'or."

In 1299 Edward I (1272-1307) granted to him, by Charter Roll, "free warren, &c., in all his demeanes of Fryton, Holthorp, &c., Co. York."
