    Obituary:
    Charles Josef Carey Jr.
    Jan 30, 1922- March 16, 2010

Joe Carey passed away Tuesday morning, March 16, at his beloved home in Davis. He was surrounded by loving family and friends during the last weeks of his life.

Born in San Francisco, Joe lived in Berkeley, Sacramento and Davis. In Sacramento, he attended Kit Carson Middle School and graduated from Sacramento High School. He graduated from UC Berkeley and was a die-hard Golden Bear football fan. While at Cal, Joe made lifelong friendships as a member of Delta Upsilon fraternity, following in his father's footsteps. Upon graduation, Joe enlisted in the U.S. Marines in 1943, and was honorably discharged in 1946 after having served in the Pacific in an Amphibious Tractor Battalion during World War II.

After returning to Berkeley, he met his future wife, Jane Hawthorne, on a blind date. They married six months later, in 1947, and were married 45 years until Jane's death in 1992. In 1950, after having earned his teaching credential at Cal, Joe and Jane moved to Davis, which was a small, quiet town. He was the first male teacher at Davis Junior High School (which later closed and was split to become Emerson and Holmes Junior Highs, respectively). Joe taught English and U.S. history, but his specialty was working with students, parents and staff. He took an ardent interest in students and knew their family lives, interests, weaknesses and strengths. His teaching style was creative yet firm and he taught with passion for his topics and the joy of learning.

In the mid-1960s, Mr. Carey moved into administration, earning a master's degree in education at the University of Nevada, Reno. He attended classes during summers, commuting between home in Davis and a rented trailer in Reno, driving an older Cadillac sedan with woolen upholstery and no air conditioning, indicative of his love for his family and dedication to his profession. As vice principal at Davis Junior High, Joe took many students under his protective wing, guiding them in the right direction and helping them grow into successful young people and adults. He and Jane also formed lasting friendships with several young teachers who came to Davis, welcoming them into their home, serving them dinner and laughter, regaling them with stories and sharing their family life (and many glasses of wine).

Always a teacher and friend, Joe returned to the classroom after a few years as vice principal. He preferred seeing students learn and grow instead of through the eyes of a disciplinarian. He was a favorite among school district maintenance and office staff, respecting their contributions to the school system equally with his fellow teachers. After his retirement from full-time teaching in 1982, Joe taught part-time, home-tutored and often filled in as a substitute.

In 1959, Joe and Jane purchased a cabin in Sierra City, which the family still owns. As a boy, Joe had spent time there visiting his great-grandparents and camping with his father, uncle and grandfather. It was there that Joe taught his children about the outdoors (if you get lost, follow a streambed downhill); how to spot and collect good firewood; the strength of a good cribbage hand; his mottos, 'never leave the car empty-handed' and 'first one up, turn on the coffee'; and the value of an afternoon nap. His idea of fishing was to follow the Fish and Game truck when it was stocking the North Fork of the Yuba, wait half an hour, toss in some rocks to be fair, fish with salmon eggs and bring home dinner. Never a hunter, he enjoyed putting out salt licks and watching the deer dine on apples from the 100-year-old apple trees in the yard.

In Davis, Joe was a founding member of the Episcopal Church of St. Martin and served on its vestry as Sr. Warden. Loving people as he did, Joe belonged to the Davis Area Chamber of Commerce in the 1950s, served as Master of Ceremonies at the annual Fourth of July celebration held at Toomey Field (where his dog used to run on the field during Aggie games), volunteered with the Davis Homeless Shelter, served as an adult literacy tutor, and was a field judge at Davis High School track meets. During the summers, to augment his salary, Joe worked for UC Davis Cooperative Extension inspecting field crops throughout the state. Although it took him away from his family and home, he enjoyed meeting the farmers and crews who worked the land.

The grandson of a music composer, Joe loved classical music and spent many hours enjoying Beethoven, Mozart and Mendelssohn (loudly!). He instilled in his children a love of poetry and prose, and enjoyed reading Louis L'Amour westerns, W.E.B. Griffin tales, David Baldacci suspense yarns and anything written by Damon Runyon. He was famous for nicknaming students and writing whimsical holiday poems about his classes, local doctors' offices and friends.

In the mid-1990s, Joe began keeping company with Susy Cassidy of Davis, with whom he enjoyed many social events and concerts, cribbage games, vacations and quiet dine-in meals. Their special, loving friendship was a great joy to Joe and his family.

A larger-than-life, loving and well-loved man with a marvelous sense of humor, Joe Carey is survived by his sister, Mary Wright of Cloverdale, daughter and son-in-law Chris Carey-Flores and Izzy Flores of Bishop, daughter Alison Carey of Davis, son and daughter-in-law Steve and Sandy Carey of Winters, granddaughters Elizabeth Carey of Davis, Molly Carey of Winters, six nieces and nephews and their families, loving friend Susy Cassidy and her family, four godsons, and many, many loving friends and extended family.

The family is grateful for the many visitors, phone calls and gestures of kindness and friendship during the past few weeks. Special thanks go to Tracy, Terri, 'Dr. Susan,' Lettie, Dominique and Katherine at Davis Foot and Ankle Center for their loving and competent care and support over the years. Dr. Kenneth Clay was always wise and kind, and Yolo Hospice was invaluable in helping the family.

A memorial service is planned at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 27, at The Episcopal Church of St. Martin, 640 Hawthorn Lane, Davis, with a reception following. For directions, call the church at (530) 756-0444. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions to Yolo Hospice, the Davis Cold Weather Shelter, the Yolo County SPCA or St. Martins.

Charles married Jane Christine Hawthorne 1947. Jane was born 22 May 1925, ____, Alameda Co., CA; died 15 Jan 1992, ____, Sacramento Co., CA; was buried Aft 15 Jan 1992, Davis Cemetery, Davis, Yolo Co., CA. [Group Sheet]
