Obituary Sketch
Elizabeth Jane Swift was born in Indiana May 26, 1820, and died at her home in Bonaparte March 1, 1904, aged 83 years, 9 months, and 5 days.
At an early age she moved with her parents to St. Louis, Mo., where she was united in marriage with Phillip Quinn at the age of eighteen. Her husband died about two years afterward leaving her with one small child, a daughter Mary.
She remained a widow three years and was then united in marriage with James Steadman and St. Louis, Mo., after which they moved to Bonaparte, Iowa, in 1884 where they resided until death. Her husband died Aug. 2, 1895.
To this union were born 10 children, five sons and five daughters, of whom only five survived, viz. W. A. Steadman of Bonaparte; Mrs. of Malissa Dean of Battle Creek, Mich.; N. F. Steadman of Anaheim, Cal.; Mrs. Emma Bennett of Tiffin, Ohio; and Miss Hattie Steadman of Bonaparte with whom she lived at the time of her death.
She was raised in the faith of the Latter Day Saints of whom her father was an Elder and in the early fifties she with her husband united with the Baptist church of this place and remained a member until 1882 when she withdrew her membership and united with the Seventh Day Adventists in Sept. 1882. Here she remained a faithful member until her death.
She is survived by 15 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. She suffered a stroke of paralysis several years ago and has been a patient sufferer ever since. Her many friends will miss her.
Funeral services were held from the late home at 2 o'clock Thursday, March 3, with internment in the Bonaparte Cemetery, Rev. J. L. Avrault officiating.
We have lost our darling mother,
She has bid is all adieu;
She has gone to live in Heaven,
And her person is lost to view.
Oh, that darling, how we loved her!
Oh, how hard to give her up!
But an angel came down for her
And remove her from our flock.
