Notes |
- According to Elizabeth (Steadman) Raynes, June 2013:
"He joined the Staffs Militia in 1852 giving his place of birth as Wolverhampton, and his former occupation as a garden toolmaker. He rose quickly through the ranks and by 1860 was a Colour Sergeant when he deserted in May of that year. After that I have drawn a complete blank, despite getting in touch with the Staffs Regiment who were most helpful, but they could offer no information as to what had happened to William after he deserted."
"Apparently the Militia was stood down in July 1860, and I am not sure that the same rules applied to the Militia as the Regular Army because it was more like the TA; the Regular Army would have been serving in the Crimea at this time. He reached the rank of Colour Sergeant, which was practically unheard of for an ordinary working man in such a short space of time."
"William joined the Staffs Militia 14th Dec.1852 in Wolverhampton giving his occupation as garden-tool maker. Between Jan 1st and March 31st 1858 he was promoted to Colour Sergeant. He was described as a Sergeant on his marriage certificate in 1855. He deserted in Dublin 15th May 1860."
"I have been in touch with the Staffs Regt. Museum and a Ret'd Lt Col expressed surprise that William was promoted in quick succession to Sgt.and Colour Sgt. He was also surprised that a Militia man was serving in Dublin. However, I subsequently received a telephone call from one of his colleagues. Apparently, the 2nd Staffs Militia Battalion are the only one not to have a record of their history. However, he did send me some information from "The Military Forces of Staffs in the 19th Century". The Militia was embodied for the first time in 36 years in 1852. He was able to confirm that the posting to the Curragh Camp, outside Dublin, came in May 1859, and they moved into Dublin about a month after my Grandfather, George Henry was born. It was disembodied in Stafford in July 1860, just 2months after William deserted. The regiment did not come up for training again until April 24th 1862."
