  Notes	Reference: Letter from William Stedman of Marshall, Texas, written 1 July 1870 to Uncle James Stedman of Chatham Co., NC. Lists number of children as nine, seven surviving. William left North Carolina between 1850 and 1853 and settled in Marshall, Texas. In 1850 Census, Chatham Co., NC, William C. Bernard, 13 and Martha E. Bernard 11 are listed as living in the household of William and Clara H. Stedman.  Could the William Bernard be the William Bernard who later married into Margaret W. Stedman, daughter of Nathan A. Stedman and Euphania White? ______________________ STEDMAN, WILLIAM (1822-1890). William Stedman, lawyer, legislator, and Confederate officer, son of Ann Clark (Ramsey) and Nathan Alexander Stedman, was born at Pittsboro, North Carolina, in 1822. He graduated from the University of North Carolina in 1842. On June 19, 1845, he married Clara Harvey White, daughter of Thomas Willis White, founder of the Southern Literary Messenger. Stedman moved to Texas in 1851, settling at Henderson. He represented Rusk County in the House of the Sixth Texas Legislature, 1855-56. Stedman was elected attorney general of Texas in August 1863, but he did not qualify for the office and instead, although an antisecessionist, went into the Confederate Army as a major on the staff of Elkanah Greer. After the war Stedman practiced law at Henderson until 1867, when he moved his office to Marshall. He died at Marshall on November 6, 1890.
